Clothes to Transform into Quilt Tops

In this one-day workshop, visiting modern quilt artist Luke Haynes will teach his methods for transforming clothing or other used textiles into quilt tops. Luke will lead the class through his methods of deconstructing and reconstructing fabric into something greater than the sum of its parts.

We will be working with abstract forms and learning how to harness fabrics that may be a little outside of the normative quilting oeuvre. Students will be encouraged to experiment and create their own pieces organically. No two finished quilt tops will look alike. 

Each student will make a small piece which can be used as a quilt top or other patchwork purpose, like a throw pillow or even in a frame. We will only be completing the quilt top in this workshop; students can choose to finish them however they like outside of class.

Are materials provided and included in cost of the class? No. 
Each student must bring to class: 

• Two matching garments or pieces of fabric 1/2 yard or bigger which match
• A piece of clothing or fabric 1/4 yard or bigger which contrasts

Ideal clothing choices for this purpose are wovens (such as button-down shirts or slacks); if in doubt, bring extra.

If you don’t have any clothing items you wish to cut, consider rescuing some inexpensive pieces from thrift stores.
