Lionel Claris

Teaches at Brookline Adult & Community Education

Lionel (Lee-ah-nel) Claris grew up in the south of France. He holds a B.A. from Hampshire College where he completed two senior theses, one in philosophy of education and the other in international relations. Lionel also holds a master's degree in education and teaching from Smith College where he worked for five years as educational consultant, co-writing several published papers in engineering education. Lionel is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the European Graduate School working in critical theory, communication and media philosophy. He is passionate about writing, particularly of the analytical and argumentative kind, because as somebody who values clear thinking, he sees a direct link between learning to write and critical thinking. Lionel has taught French from elementary to high school levels internationally. Thus far in his career, he has taught students French from Belgium, England, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, the US and even France. Lionel has a particular interest for teaching through alternative means such as the linguistics-grounded TPR Storytelling approach.
