In quality, quantity and pure enjoyment, Italy is the world’s greatest wine-grower. But until the 1950’s, most Italian wine was sold in bulk, with no reference to grape, region or vintage. How did this nation known for straw-wrapped bottles of plonk transform into America’s favorite import? Join advanced sommelier, Mary Ross, in this virtual class as we taste 3 favorite Italian wines, practice Italian wine terms and discuss traditional and New World food pairings for Italian wine!
To enhance your experience, we recommend you’re tasting the same wines with Mary Ross during class. Order your three 750ml bottles of Italian wine by 12/12 for curbside pickup from The Chopping Block Lincoln Square on Tuesday 12/8, Thursday 12/10, or Saturday 12/12 from 3-5pm.
Wines Featured in Class:
If you’re unable to pick up the wines from TCB, we recommend you procure bottles featuring the same region and grape. This includes:
If you’re looking for classic food to complement these wines, Mary suggests Italian cured meats, cheeses and/or pizza! Or, order one of our charcuterie and cheese plates available for curbside pickup on Friday, 12/11 from 4-5pm.
Our virtual tastings, via Zoom, are a fun opportunity to watch your sommelier in action. Our Zoom moderator will make sure your questions submitted through the chat option are answered during or after class. The tasting packet will be provided upon registration.
Since our stores remain closed for COVID-19, we unfortunately cannot accept gift cards as form of payment for virtual classes at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience!

You could sample a new Spanish wine every night of the year and still not experience all the variety that this country produces. Each region has their own specialty. Rioja creates smoky, earthy, subtle reds with the Tempranillo grape, while the Priorat region makes rich, dense, powerful reds from the Garnacha variety. The Ribera del Duero also employs...

French wines ooze intimidation; the language, no grape listed anywhere in sight, countless vineyards and producers, and all this at often exorbitant prices. Yet even in the face of these apparent obstacles, France is worthy of our attention. Why? Simply because they still continue to create so many of the world’s most intriguing, exotic, and individualistic...

By far, my favorite class of the year. We’ll pour eight wines. Some from islands. Some from volcanoes. Some from volcanoes on islands. We’ll talk about why these wines are unique, what sets them apart, and how to track them down. Islands are a special habitat for growing grapes. When the vineyards hug the coast, the grapes soak up the sun...

It’s human nature to want things we can’t have, or things which are rare. With wine it’s no different. Maybe it’s that bottle you had in Tuscany, made by a producer who does not import to the U.S., or a wine you read about, made by a small group of nuns in Campania, but they only produce 80 cases a year. I get it, as I, too, covet and wonder...
