What you'll learn in this society class:

Currently, there is a rise in racial hatred, disparaged discourse in social media and media coverage, and all too often, police brutality. Racism is a painful reality you may struggle to comprehend. It can be a difficult paradigm and challenge for everyday living, especially in urban areas with diverse groups of people.

Racism is a fluid ongoing struggle. White fragility and black pain are two concepts that trigger issues for both white and black people. The challenge for everyone is to appreciate how racism is often conditional and impacts people of color, regardless of their socio-economic status, education, or place in society.

If you work in a diverse setting, then your exposure to racial issues is greater and communication is not passive but active. Becoming informed about systemic and structural racism is essential for your own discourse in your work and play environment.

Based on the book White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo and her guidelines for discussion, discover how to close the gap that impacts race negatively on society.
  • Find out how your racial position—whether you identify as white, a person of color, or multiracial—affects your ability to see racism as a vulnerability among your peers, co-workers, neighbors, or community-at-large.
  • Engage in a circle process that ensures everyone has an opportunity to speak without interruption, ridicule, or dismissal of personal beliefs.
  • Discover key strategies to diffuse the possible personal attacks on your character regardless of your race.
  • Decipher and re-think previously held beliefs about systemic racism, institutional racism, and white fragility.
Be part of this inclusive and supportive experience where people of all racial identities access meaningful dialogue to improve and inspire your life.
