African is a traditional Nigerian dance class emphasizes the dancer and life as a community versus as an individual. The body is divided into several centers of movement, with each area being able to move to different rhythms of the music, generally a drumbeat. Modern was born in the early 20th century and is a dance style that centers on a dancer's own interpretations instead of structured steps, as in classical ballet dancing. Basic Jazz

In the mid 20th century, Jazz dance took on Carribean influences and became a performing art with a strong center of ballet technique. Dancers wear tap shoes- hard-soled and typically leather with metal plates on the balls and heels of the sole- and create percussive sounds and rhythms against a wood floor.
