Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this figure painting class:

Centered around painting the figure from life, this class is a visual laboratory aimed at improving our ability to paint, see, and harness inspiration from the world around and inside us. The course will begin by covering tried and true foundational methods of painting — as we practice things like drawing the figure in proportion and mixing color — and gradually introduce more contemporary ideas and approaches. Through demonstrations, in-class exercises, readings, and an underlying spirit of playful experimentation, students will ultimately develop a more personal working process, strategies for “catching” ideas and inspiration, and an improved ability to weave together visually rich and impactful compositions.

Supply List:

  • Bucket/container for water
  • Paper towels
  • Palette
  • Moleskin sketchbook (watercolor paper)
  • Odorless mineral spirits (such as Gamsol) and container such as silicoil or jar.
  • Pencils for sketching, kneaded eraser
  • General’s charcoal 2b and 4b
  • Vine charcoal
  • Grey Matters paper palette 12×16″, palette knife

Painting Surface: You may bring in and use any canvas/panels sitting around. We prefer smooth wood panels such as Ampersand Gessobord sizes 12×16 and up. Fredericks Canvas pads also work. We will need 7 surfaces.

Brushes: An assortment of shapes and sizes (use what you’ve got). We recommend having both synthetic and bristle brushes. We prefer to use Trekell, Winsor Newton University series short-handled rounds, or Signet Robert Simmons brushes.

Oil Paints:

  • Burnt sienna
  • Olive green (must be Winsor Newton brand, not Gamblin)
  • Alizarin crimson
  • French Ultramarine blue
  • Cobalt blue
  • Manganese blue hue
  • Indian yellow (or cadmium yellow medium)
  • Yellow ochre pale
  • Titanium White
  • Dioxazine purple
  • Scarlet lake (or some bright red)
  • Cadmium green pale

Watercolor and Gouache Paints:(use what you have)

Any basic set of watercolors and Gouache, or tubes or pans, will work; bring whatever you have.

Workshop etiquette

  • If you arrive late, please enter quietly. If you have equipment to set up, please wait for a break to set up so that you do not disrupt the class.
  • The front row of benches is reserved for individuals who are sitting. Standing in the front row will block the view of those behind you. Personal easels are not allowed in the front row, unless they are low enough that it does not obstruct any portion of the view of the people behind you.
  • Please be mindful of the amount of space you and your equipment occupy. Economize your work space to accommodate fellow artists.
  • Please be polite to the models, and ask first before taking their pictures. The model may require a fee.
  • Please do not talk while class is in session. Save all discussions for outside the studio.
  • Be sure to switch cell phones and pagers to silent model.
  • Don’t comment on others’ work unless it is solicited.
  • Animals are not permitted at school for health reasons. Assistance dogs for the disabled are allowed.
  • Please clean up your work area and properly dispose of your waste after class. Use the brush cleaning closet, not the bathroom sinks, to clean your hands, paintbrushes and other art tools.
  • No turpentine or smelly solvents and mediums are allowed. Odorless mineral spirits is preferred.

Note:

$20 Reg fee not included and should be paid directly to LAAFA
