Ascot Hills is 5 minutes from downtown LA with some great photo ops, especially at during sunset. The workshop begins a couple of hours in advance of sunset for your DPA instructor to discuss a variety of photo strategies from pre-sunset lighting to sunset and blue light post sunset. Each offers their own special advantages.
There are a number of approaches for capturing the city skyline during each lighting condition, culminating to the setting sun and just after, street and office building lights twinkling. Try them all and decide which best fits your signature style of making photographs.
Choices range from depicting the city skyline well off into the distance, to a closer focus on the skyscraper silhouettes. For a more edgy sensibility, your DPA instructor knows of a vacant area where you can frame the metropolitan center with a barb wire accessorized chain-link fence.
This workshop also allows you to hone in on landscape photography amid the green hills of Ascot Hills. Your DPA instructor will help you consider a variety of composition approaches, from Rule of Thirds with the scene dominated by the sky or maybe a more symmetrical approach where the greenery is the main element of the story.
If you have a tripod that would be helpful but there are other ways to stabilize your camera for longer exposures as advised by your DPA instructor.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a talk with one of our experienced instructors, and then you and your fellow students take a stroll through one of a variety of photogenic locales (in any of the 20+ cities the DPA encapsulates). There is street photography, magnificent interiors, farmers markets, zoos, landscapes, and more, photos of which are included within. These photos are a mix of student and instructor images in many different venues and cities across the United States and Canada.
You will have fun in the three-hour session, learn to shoot strategically, get more interesting photos of the event, and walk away with a foundation to improve your photographs in the future, whether you’re traveling, or at a birthday party and everywhere in between.
