Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this clay class:

This class is for all skill levels. You can learn to sculpt in figurative or abstract, terracotta or plasteline, creating large or small projects, with or without an armature. You can sculpt from your imagination, drawings, or photo. We will guide you through the process, using either terracotta or plasteline clay.

In this four-hour studio workshop, you will work on your own project under the direction of our instructor. Our instructors have the ability to help any sculptor further develop their eye, intuition, and imagination.

Important notes:

  • Clay, board, tool use and one simple armature are included in your class fee. There may be an surcharge for large or complicated sculptures/armatures. We offer both water and oil-based clay to our students or they may bring their own.
  • Face Coverings are required and class size is limited to facilitate safe social distancing. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes that can get dusty. Bring lunch or snack if desired. We have a refrigerator, microwave, and water dispenser.

Question from mo
Hello! Will you be firing any of the clay sculptures, or are they sent home "raw"?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hello, Mo! Teale Sculpture Studio have a kiln and are happy to fire the students' water-based clay projects in-house. They sell 3 types of water-based clay which range from $12-$18 per 25-pound bag. Sculptures done in oil-based clay are not fired but typically sent to a foundry for casting. Another option is to use their air-dry clay which requires neither foundry nor kiln. Hope this helps!

Question from Ria C.
Is this a good class for someone who is a proficient wheel potter but wants to get into sculpting?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hey there, Ria! Yes, the clay sculpture classes would be appropriate because they are studio format (each student works on his/her own project) and mixed level. The school work with everyone from the 2D artist exploring 3D to complete novices to someone who took sculpture in college or high school years ago and wish to explore it again. Hope this helps!

Question from Heidi N.
How much do the materials cost if purchased from the instructor?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
They have water-based clay in stock at the Studio - 25 lb block for $10. Students that prefer oil-based clay buy it themselves. There are studio tools which can be used by the new student but they do sell a beginners’ clay tools set for $15. They have armature components in the studio at a nominal cost ($1 - $10) to the student. Some students bring these from home as well. Typically the beginning student does not need an armature.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
They also have a kiln so firing can be done in-house for a nominal fee. Therefore, a brand new student just needs to purchase/bring clay to get started on the first project. Nothing else should be needed.
