Description
With the advent of the internet, on-line shopping, and point and click culture, these arts, which have been part of the fabric of our lives for millennia, are waning as are the neighborhood shops that cater to them. Once taught in schools or in homes by parents and grandparents, these arts are falling through the cracks. Lana’s vision is for a vibrant store, atelier, and community space where fiber arts and artists can thrive.
To preserve and promote these arts, the shop offers 3-4 classes per day to include quilting, knitting, felting, weaving, embroidery, crochet, re-purposing and more. The ample space allows for a larger class area for sewing and quilting and a smaller more intimate table for handwork classes in knitting, crocheting, and embroidery.
A veritable feast of colors and textures featuring fabric lines from top designers and sumptuous fibers, the store’s merchandise is comprised of cottons, silks, woolens, yarn, roving, floss, trims, buttons, and more. Artists also sell their wares, so those who enjoy purchasing hand-made gifts will have a tempting place to shop.
Lana attributes her inspiration for the store to her mother, Betty, who was an avid quilter and taught Lana all of the traditional fiber arts throughout her life. Raised in Los Angeles during the Depression, Betty shared with her children stories of her own childhood—her grandmother’s pantry, paper dolls, skate coasters, and resourceful women who created dresses, dishcloths, and quilts from flour sacks. These images became fixed in Lana’s mind, and the nostalgic aesthetic of the shop is a nod to her mother, those women, and bygone days.
Quilt’ n’ Things Fiber Arts opened its doors in late September 2016. Lana is thrilled to be carrying on the Quilt’ n’ Things legacy and re-creating a store that’s become a fixture in the Montrose Shopping Park for decades. Those who come by to visit, shop, or share a cup of coffee or tea will surely be in for a treat!
