What you'll learn in this beginner drawing class:

In this class we will do a graphite still life drawing. I will go over hatching and cross hatching techniques to build value to create depth, and use basic shapes to build our objects. We will review how to create a dynamic composition to make a beautiful drawing! The techniques you will learn are foundational skills that can be applied to a variety of drawing styles and projects.

Each class focuses on a different object. Note that you can take any class you'd like or multiple.

  • 3/27: Botanical - flower, leaf, any object from nature
  • 4/10 Faces - a photo of someone's face or a mirror setup
  • 4/24: Still life - an object from your home (examples include a cup, pencil, fruit, etc)
  • 5/8: Landscape - a photo of a landscape you want to recreate / be positioned near a window
  • 5/22: Botanical - flower, leaf, any object from nature

About the Instructor:

Virtual Class FAQ

What will be included in my Virtual Class package?

One ticket includes an access link to your live, online class. The class will be delivered via web conferencing software and feature a live, professional instructor who will walk you through a lesson as described above. You will have the opportunity to ask questions as well as participate from home.

How many people is my purchase good for?

Each ticket is good for one "device" (i.e. one computer, phone, tablet, etc. you'll be logging in from). This ensures we don't get more people in the class than the instructor can handle. Though we understand some people live together and will be working/learning together, the intent is that each class still allows for the same attention to attendees as if students purchased separately. Please be respectful of this!

Will I need anything from home to use in the class?

You will need a reliable Internet connection as well as a computer or device with which you can access your virtual class. We recommend you arrive to class 5-10 minutes early to ensure you're able to set up your device and connection. Additionally, if the class is more than just a lecture you will likely want any materials listed in the course description as "Materials Needed to Participate Fully", though you're welcome to purchase a seat and sit in and just watch.

Am I able to ask questions or interact with the class?

Yes, you'll both be able to ask questions using the chat function in the video hosting software as well as at certain intervals during the class via voice/audio. If the class winds up being on the smaller side, more spontaneous interaction/questions will be encouraged.

Do I have to show my video or speak during class?

While we recommend you do show your video and speak when encouraged to by the instructor, video and audio participation are never mandatory. We find classes have more fun experiences when people are engaging with one another, but understand not everyone will want to do so and that's ok!

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy

Students may cancel any time 48 hours or more before the class to receive a refund. Students canceling less than 48 hours before a class will receive a full credit towards rescheduling or purchasing a different class.

Is this class Saturday 5/22 or Sunday 5/23? It’s been listed both ways in your ads.
Question from Jaz M.
When is the next class on face drawing offered?
Question from Julie
I work every Saturday until 2:30. Do you offer any other later Saturday times? Like 3:00 or 4:00? I am interested in this class.
Question from Anonymous
How old do you have to be in order to book a class?
Question from DiAnne S.
Should the classes be taken in a certain order - For example, should the Still Life be taken before the Landscape? Otherwise do they progress in difficulty.
Answer from Jenny T. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Dianne! Great questions. They do not progress - you can take any of the classes above, we simply outlined the subject matter focus.
Question from DiAnne S.
Is the fee $25 for one class or 4 classes. I would assume one. If I select a start date later in May will my instruction start with the Still Life? How do I find out when dates the next 3 sessions will be scheduled on. Thanks, clearly I am confused!
Answer from Jenny T. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi! Thank you so much for pointing this out-- definitely our mistake. Classes are $25 per session - you're correct in assuming that. We updated the subject matter for each class in the description above so you should see a subject matter per every date that's available. If you have any other questions or other class topics that you're interested, we're all ears!
Question from Maria A.
When and at what time are the classes?
Answer from Jenny T. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
There are several dates that you can enroll in. If you scroll up on the page, you'll see a section with dates and time listed and a book button next to each.
Question from Gladys S.
I do stainglass suncatcher, since i cant draw, Ive been using patterns from others, I like to do my own drawing , my question is , does this class do such a thing? Gladys
Answer from Kiya N.
Hi Gladys! This class is a great one to take if you want to improve your drawing skills. You will be able to draw from whatever inspiration is right in front of you, or even a picture. This technique would improve your understanding of shape building and space relationships.

Teacher was encouraging and gave great tips. I felt very inspired to create. Wish the class was longer and the zoom meeting less laggy but that's not the teacher's fault.

Very goodinstructor. Only issue was that it was difficult to listen and watch the instructor at the same time trying to produce a drawing, class was only one hour so there was really not enough time to draw and watch, excellent suggestions, though!

I learned some helpful and useful techniques. The instructor was extremely positive and gave us all encouragement to keep on practicing and also to enjoy the journey of learning to depict the world with our pens, pencils, and paints!
