What you'll learn in this cartoon class:

This class combines solid visual art fundamental with exercises designed to jump-start your creative process and inspire you to discover new ideas in unexpected places. You will be able to take these skills and apply them to every facet of comics production from initial sketch to print. The skills are there, available for anyone who signs up and is willing to try. The only thing that determines how far you can take them is your own drive and your level of investment and commitment.

The class helps you to discover or rediscover many basics like anatomy, foreshortening, shading environment and composition, and from the beginning you will be trained how to handle your tools and apply ink, first in a series of short value studies and then quickly moving onto applying inks to concept work.

You will tackle several different short story projects and stand alone pieces. These lessons are there to offer you a chance to build your vocabulary as a cartoonist and give you a chance to encounter all the challenges necessary to tell visual stories on paper. If a student has a project they wish to substitute for the class lesson that is also usually OK. This is a flexible environment designed to help you reach your goals.

Supply List:

If you prefer, you can wait to get the inking supplies after the first day demo, just come in on the first day with paper and
pencil.
  • Pencils, a standard HB pencil, some hard pencils, such as a 2h, a 3h or a 4h. (Pencils are numbered on the side)
  • Waterproof Black Ink, (no Higgens please. Suggestions: Yasutomo, FW, Doc Martin, Speedball Ultra Black)
  • One Speedball Sketching Nib Set (also called “mapping” nibs) (These come with black long black holder and a shorter brown pen holder pith multiple nib sizes)

Cartooning & Illustration for Beginners with Josh Bayer was a great beginner class for getting right into making cartoons and comics for adults. Josh covered some essential subjects in each class with demonstrations and gave in-class assignments based on the subject matter. We covered various topics like crosshatching, drawing the female form, shadow and light, paneling, inking, and perspective. Homework assignments were fun and built on the skills developed in class. Josh and others got a chance to critique assignments and make suggestions. Josh's suggestions were always right on the money. Class had a great range of abilities and styles, and all were welcomed and encouraged. Everyone got to develop their own thing, in their own way. I highly recommend this class to those who are interested in a basic intro to the art form.
