This week-long intensive will introduce students to digital design and fabrication tools for making glass molds, from the process of 3D modeling to CNC milling and mold-making. We will go over best practices for designing geometry for digital fabrication, and experience CNC-milling through one session at an off-site fabrication studio. At UrbanGlass, we’ll practice making plaster molds for casting and blown glass.
What to Expect: We will prepare with one virtual session a week before class (July 11th) to review 3d-modeling in rhinoceros. Students with previous experience will be asked to come prepared with a 3d model within certain dimensions. Those without experience can still participate by using a simple shape that the instructors will 3d model for them, however we will not be able to teach everyone 3d modeling skills in this timeframe. Previous glass-making experience is not required. We will demonstrate a few different approaches to mold-making and students can expect to walk away with a glass prototype of their own, as well as the skills to design and make other molds in the future.
Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the moldmaking studio, without instruction, on Wednesday - Saturday from 1pm-4pm.
Eligibility: No previous experience required (see note about 3D rendering experience in what to expect section). Open at ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up any work made hot on the final day.
