This workshop will teach students how to recycle glass using basic flameworking skills, and transform it into their own upcycled glass beads for jewelry and crafts. We will use collected glass - from recycling to thrifted pieces - and transform the found glass into cane (rods) to use as our main material. We will then use those rods to create beads. Join in for this fun and transformative process!
What to Expect: The class will start with an introduction to flameworking and safety followed by a demo on how to pull glass cane rods. After the demo students will work on pulling their own glass cane for the beads they will make on day 2. Utilizing recycled glass is less predictable than standard effetre or borosilicate, so expect a bit of a challenge! There will be successes and failures along the way to making some successful final pieces.
Flameworking requires a little practice at heat control with the torch to create successful pieces. After demonstrations, expect to make some successful objects in this class, and a couple failures, while gaining confidence and skill in the studio.
Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to the school once notified to pick up their work.
This is an in-person class taking place on-site at our school. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
