Description

What you'll learn in this jewelry making class:

Building on fundamentals covered in SXK 101, students select stones and build a piece of jewelry of their own creation. Design and execute your own sterling silver prong/wire-wrapped pendant with a cabochon or faceted stone, designing the back plate, creating and soldering wire, adding a bail and decorative elements such as twisted wire, pickling, pre-polishing, stone setting and final finishing. 

Prerequisite needed for this class: 
SXK 101 or JD 101 or permission from the instructor.

Are materials provided and included in cost of the class? No.

Materials you will need to bring to class on the first day of class: 
  • set of six needles file cut #2
  • 1 ½ round hand file school grade cut #03 sheets each wet/dry silicone carbide paper 220,420,600
  • one sheet each 3 X 3
  • 18 gauge brass, copper and nickel
  • one saw frame 4”
  • two dozen #0 saw blades
  • set of six drill bits
  • one center punch
  • one asbestos free soldering pad
  • one solder pick
  • solder tweezer and sticker
  • jar Dandix Paste flux
  • one sheet each easy
  • medium and hard solder
  • polishing kit (wheels only)
  • flex shaft chuck key and mandrels (2 split, 1 screw)
  • square
  • ruler
  • divider
  • eye protection 
  • Optional: one sterling silver bar stock square rod 3/16, 6.5 mm-8.5 mm
These supplies can be purchased at All Craft Tool 135 West 29th Street, second floor, 212 279-7077. Students choose material at their own level of expense.

Important Things to Note:
  • This class is held in an FIT Jewelry Design studio room with some tools available.
  • Check room postings in the Fred P. Pomerantz Art and Design Center lobby (7th avenue at 27th Street), by security, or call the day of class for locations: 212-217-8741 or 212-217-3334.

Refund Policy

Continuing and Professional Studies Refund Policy:

Courses canceled 24 business hours in advance can be fully refunded. Courses that have 2 sessions has 25% refund after first session. Courses that have 3 sessions has 50% refund after first session; No refund after second session. Courses that have 4 sessions will have 50% refund after first session and 25% refund after second session and no refund after third session. Courses that have 5 or more sessions has 75% refund after first session, 50% after second session and 25% after third session and no refund after fourth session.

Please note that there are no makeup sessions and it is highly recommended students attend all sessions of classes they sign up for. They are short, intensive courses and missing one day is missing a lot. 


Precollege Programs Refund Policy:

The $15 registration fee is not refundable.

The refund period ends prior to the second scheduled session of the class, in accordance with the following:

FIT Precollege Programs canceled the course due to low enrollment :
100% including registration fee


Withdrawal prior to the last day of registration :
100% exclusive of registration fee

Withdrawal prior to first day of class:
75% exclusive of registration fee

Withdrawal prior to second day of class:
50% exclusive of registration fee

Withdrawal thereafter:
No refund
