What you'll learn in this wine tasting class:
The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) is widely considered the greatest red wine Domaine in Burgundy. Its modern history can be traced to the 1869 purchase of Romanée-Conti by Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, a Santenay-based négociant. However, the Domaine’s most famous vineyard’s history goes back much further and is laid-out well in Richard Olney’s book titled, Romanée-Conti. The vineyard’s most famous proprietor was Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince de Conti, who purchased what was then-known as La Romanée in 1760. Two of the Domaine’s Grand Cru vineyards - Échezeaux and Grands-Échezeaux lie next to each other. Grands-Échezeaux is much smaller and forms a roughly triangular piece which fits into and squares off the south-west corner of Clos de Vougeot, which it hardly resembles.
Grands-Échezeaux is a powerful wine that really has more in common with Richebourg, La Tâche and Romanée-Conti than Échezeaux, which is lighter and more delicately perfumed. DRC, who is the largest owner clearly makes the reference standard Grands-Échezeaux. Join us for an incredible part three of our continued retrospective of DRC.
