Yoga Nidra is a technique in which you learn to relax consciously. It is a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental, and emotional relaxation and is designed to release muscular, emotional and mental tensions.
It is said that a single hour of yoga nidra is as restful as four hours of conventional sleep! The term yoga nidra is derived from two Sanskrit words, yoga meaning union or one-pointed awareness, and nidra which means sleep.
During the practice of yoga nidra, one’s consciousness sits in the threshold state between sleep and wakefulness but is subject to neither.
In the raja yoga system of Patanjali, there is a state called pratyahara where mind and mental awareness are dissociated from sensory channels.
Yoga nidra is one aspect of pratyahara which leads to higher states of concentration, and is profoundly useful for developing awareness, memory and creativity, and strengthening the central nervous system.
