The Neue Galerie is one of New York City’s most unsung—and most understated—art and design destinations. The Neue Galerie (or “New Gallery” in German) houses a singular collection of art and design objects from Austria and Germany, dating from 1890 to 1940. Notably, the collection, compiled in large part by Ronald S. Lauder, includes Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece, The Woman in Gold. The gallery’s greatest strength, however, lies in the clarity and cohesion of its curation. And its greatest charms lie in its home: a landmark building completed in 1914 by the architectural firm Carrère & Hastings, known for their design of the New York Public Library.
On this tour, students will trace the evolution of Austrian and German art and design from the grace and opulence of fin-de-siècle Vienna to the austerity and anxiety of the interwar years in Germany with Kelly Konrad, MA, professor of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons School of Design. Students will not only marvel at Klimt’s brushstrokes and the gallery’s gilded age architecture, but also reacquaint themselves with such influential design movements as the Vienna Secession and Wiener Werkstätte.
Design centers and showrooms may require proof of COVID-19 vaccination and masks for entry.
