What you'll learn in this teacher training course:

Many play therapists, child therapists, and expressive arts therapists have discovered the power of Sandplay Therapy for healing and transformation. There are various theoretical underpinnings for this modality but for those who follow the teachings of Swiss psychotherapist, Dora Kalff, the psychology of Carl Jung is paramount. Jung was unique in his recognition of the value of symbol and the ability to symbolize and use one’s imagination to activate the whole of the client’s psyche in the healing process.

As trauma treatment has advanced from talk therapies to those incorporating the body, sandplay therapy is being recognized as a depth treatment effective in the treatment of trauma either as a stand-alone or as an adjunct modality.

Description of course activity content:
This course examines sandplay therapy in the tradition of Dora Kalff. This modality is based on the archetypal psychology of C.G. Jung and Eastern contemplative traditions. Participants will learn differences between Kalffian sandplay and sand tray therapies. Participants will learn what neuroscience has to say about the potential of sandplay therapy to provide healing for trauma.

Participants will witness a completed Sandplay therapy case as shown through photographs of the process, noting elements of wounding, healing and transformation. Participants will have opportunities to experience aspects of sandplay themselves during directed and non-directed exercises. No previous sandplay experience is necessary.

Workshop Teaching Modalities:
  • Experiential exercises
  • Didactic material
  • Sandplay Case material
Learning Objectives:
  1. Explain 3 important differences between sand tray therapies and Jungian Sandplay therapy as developed by swiss child analyst Dora M. Kalff.
  2. State the symbolic meaning of at least 3 miniature figures or symbols occurring in a series of sequential sandplay images.
  3. Define the free and protected space as developed by Dora Kalff.
  4. Explain how sandplay accesses our neurobiology to enhance healing.
  5. Describe the personal experience of creating in the sand and what effect that might have on clients.
