Cultural Assoc'n of the Molise Region

The Cultural Association of the Molise Region (CAMR): Universitas Civium Oratino was founded in 2006 and is a cultural association for Italian-Americans, Americans with Italian roots, and anyone else interested in the rich culture of Italy.

The phrase Universitas Civium Oratino was coined in the 17th century or perhaps even earlier in the town of Oratino (in the Molise region of Italy) and referred to the civic union--the coming together--of the Oratinese community. We have chosen this historic name to once again unite people from the groups mentioned above that live in the northeast part of the United States. Moreover, this name symbolizes a high level initiative to promote, spread, and celebrate the rich culture and traditions of Italy, highlighting the not-so-well-known but beautiful and wonderfully diverse region of Molise.

Also of interest is the fact that, in the 3rd century B.C. the modern region of Molise was part of the ancient country Samnium (Latin), controlled by the Samnite tribes. Together the tribes formed an organized democratic republic which encouraged freedom of expression. They were formidable warriors as well as a proud and capable people, and to this day, many in this region are proud to call themselves Sanniti.

• To promote, spread, and celebrate the traditions and culture of the region of Molise and the rich language and culture of Italy in general
• To create opportunities for all of its members to enjoy and share in recreational, sports, cultural and social activities
• To unite its members in a common bond of mutual respect
• To promote cordial relationships with all other ethnic groups in the community
