Niko Romito & Matthew Kenney

Teaches at La Scuola at Eataly Flatiron

Abruzzese chef, Niko Romito was born in Castel di Sangro. There, in 1996, the parents of Niko decided to convert their small pastry shop into a trattoria called “Reale’. Niko returned home from his studies in Rome when his father fell ill, and he began to run the trattoria with his sister Cristiana. Needing to learn more about the craft of cooking he embarked on a journey of self teaching and experience based learning, having attended “A Tavola con lo Chef” culinary school, then taking a series of courses at the Istituto Etoile, and finally spending time in Girona at El Celler de Can Roca. In 2005, Niko gained recognition when he was included in the JRE Guide (Young European Restaurateurs). In 2006, he was among the best emerging chefs in the Gambero Rosso Guide and was named Young Chef of the Year by the Espresso Guide. In 2007, he was given his first Michelin star, and he received his second Michelin star between 2009 and 2011. He is also the recipient of three forks from Gambero Rosso and is included in the Le Soste Guide. Romito won the Lunch of the Year award from the Espresso Guide and was named Chef of the Year by Identità Golose.
