Class Description

Description

Learn the fascinating art and technique of shibori dyeing in this comprehensive workshop. You will explore shibori from multiple angles, discovering several different shibori techniques and dyeing a variety of items, from clothing pieces to accessories to home decor objects.

What is Shibori?

Shibori is a traditional Japanese dyeing method that typically involves folding, twisting, or bunching fabric and then binding it with cord or clamps before dyeing it in indigo. The areas bound by cord or clamps resist the dye, creating areas of the cloth that do not absorb color and remain white. The dyed areas, where the dye penetrates the fabric, create distinctive blue patterns based on the resist method used. Shibori is an extensive technique with countless variations and an infinite number of patterns you can create. In this class, you will get an in-depth exploration of several different approaches.

The workshop begins with a demonstration of basic shibori techniques and an overview of the many patterns you can achieve. You will then dye a small swatch of white fabric to practice your hand and become comfortable with the technique. Once you develop confidence and understanding, you will apply your knowledge to dye 2-3 of your own items.

What to Bring:

The workshop price includes dyes and plain fabric for practicing and experimenting. You should bring your own items to dye. Items must be 100 percent cotton or other natural fiber, white or undyed, and should be small or medium-sized. Ideal items include button-down shirts, t-shirts, tanks, leggings, white jeans, dish towels, and pillowcases. Please do not bring large items such as curtains or bed sheets, as space is limited for larger pieces. Old items with stains are actually ideal, since the stains can be covered and blended with the dyed pattern.

Shibori dyeing is a truly magical craft because every piece you create is a little bit of a mystery until you unfold it. The process of folding fabric, dyeing it, and then unfolding it to reveal the organic and unique results is deeply satisfying. Join us for an amazing afternoon of shibori magic.

Refund Policy

We do not issue refunds on workshop registrations.

  • If you register for a workshop and later become unable to attend, we will gladly offer a credit if you notify us at least 5 business days before the workshop.
  • Workshop credits are not redeemable for cash and cannot be applied to merchandise purchases
  • We are unable to offer credits of any kind, or honor reschedule requests, with less than 5 business days advance notice.
  • Credits cannot be given for any registrations for workshops hosted by visiting/ out of town instructors. Due to the nature of these one-time-only workshops, all events hosted by special guests are subject to this policy. Thank you for understanding!
  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Our workshops require a great deal of pre-planning, including ordering supplies and tools, booking staff, and making commitments to pay our instructors -- all based on the number of students who register. When students ask to cancel or reschedule at the last minute, we lose money. As a small business, we are unable to absorb these costs and still keep our class prices low.

In fairness to all of our customers, we are unable to make exceptions to our policy, including for reasons of illness or travel. If you are unable to attend a workshop at the last minute, we suggest giving your spot to a friend!

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.

    Loved this class!!
  • Indigo Shibori Dyeing

The instructor was great!! She was very sweet and helpful. But halfway the class a lot of people from a previous Shibori class were invited to join ours and that took time and space away making it a bit uncomfortable.

This was such a wonderful class! Carolyn was very knowledgable on the subject and offered many helpful tips and insights. There was plenty of room to spread out and work, and the process was so easy to learn, that I was able to walk away with the confidence to do it on my own. They also sell shibori dye kits there, and I grabbed one of my way out. Highly recommend this class!!
