Pike Place Market evolved from a simple farmer's venue established in the early twentieth century into a dynamic public space overflowing with visual splendor. The market offers compelling environmental portraiture opportunities among diverse visitors and vendors, scenic waterside views, vibrant floral arrangements, abundant fish and produce displays, and lively street-level people photography.
Your Digital Photo Academy instructor will demonstrate an extensive range of composition strategies and camera control techniques to transform casual snapshots into dynamic photographs that tell compelling visual stories. These techniques are straightforward to learn yet powerful in their impact on your final images. If circumstances align, you may capture the fishmongers in action as they toss fresh catches from truck to iced display, offering a perfect opportunity to master the art of panning photography.
Your instructor will also teach you composition options, including leading lines, the rule of thirds, negative space, and many other techniques you will apply repeatedly in your future photography work. These principles apply across all photography situations and venues.
Meeting location: Near the main entrance of Pike Place Market at the intersection of Pike Street and First Avenue. Your instructor, Jeffrey Fong, will be waiting at the end of the island nearest First Avenue near the information booth.

Each Composition in the Field class begins with an instructional talk from one of our experienced photographers, followed by a stroll through one of many photogenic locations featured across the 20-plus cities in the Digital Photo Academy network. You and your fellow students will explore street photography opportunities, magnificent interiors, farmers' markets, zoos, landscapes, and additional diverse venues. Class photos represent a mix of student and instructor images captured at many different locations across the United States and Canada.
During the three-hour session, you will have fun while learning strategic shooting approaches, capture better photographs of subjects and events, and develop a foundation for improving your photographs in the future, whether you are traveling, attending celebrations, or photographing everyday situations.
