Class Description

Description

This camp invites young artists into the rich and endlessly fascinating world of color, expressive brushwork, and painting inspired by the great traditions of art history. Each day, students explore a different artist or movement, examining what makes each approach distinctive and then putting those ideas directly into practice through their own original paintings.

Students might spend one session channeling the bold, flat color fields of Henri Matisse, and the next session exploring the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionism or the careful observation of the Impressionists. The approach is genuinely hands-on and discovery-based: students look closely, discuss what they see, and then create from their own perspective, guided but never constrained by the examples they have studied.

What to Bring to Camp:

  • Please apply sunscreen to your child before camp. We work primarily under tents, but students may be in direct sunlight briefly during breaks. A brimmed hat is a good idea if your child uses one.
  • Bring a nut-free snack and a labeled beverage each day. We supply Pepperidge Farm Goldfish crackers and bottled water if your child forgets.
  • Label anything your child might remove, including hats, sweatshirts, lunchboxes, and water bottles, so everything makes it home at the end of the day.
  • If your child is staying between sessions for lunch, please pack a nut-free lunch and a second drink.
  • Please dress your child in clothes that can handle paint. We have smocks available, but complete protection is not guaranteed.
  • Any medications, including EpiPens or inhalers, should be in a clearly labeled zip-top bag and handed directly to the teacher at drop-off.

This is a camp for young painters who are curious about where art comes from, excited to explore new techniques, and ready to create something genuinely their own each day.
