Capture the graceful curve of an unfolding bud, the surprise of new leaves, or the lightness of a cloud through Ikebana -- the art of Japanese flower arranging. The instructors will demonstrate several techniques and then help you create your favorite version. All plant materials will be collected fresh from the Arboretum grounds. Each student will create an arrangement to take home.
Required Materials: A kenzan and container will need to be purchased in addition to the program fee; if you wish, you may purchase these from the instructor for $17.
Supply List
Container:
A round shallow container about 10 to 12 inches in diameter. Here are three samples
Locally, Salt Creek Pottery in Villa Park carries dishes that are suitable for Ikebana. Ceramic plant saucer, rectangular or oval shape baking dishes are alternatives as a starter before finding your favorite Ikebana containers.
Metal Floral Frog (a.k.a. kenzan in Japanese)
One or two 3.5" x 2.5" metal floral frogs.
Metal floral frogs are known as kenzan in Japanese. Floral frogs are made with needle pins on heavy base. It is re-usable from design to design.
Some Jo Ann Fabrics carry round floral frog. Look for kenzan from Amazon on line.
Clipper (a.k.a. hasami in Japanese)
A Japanese floral shear or a garden pruner. Here are two samples of clippers.
Water bucket / Bag
A water bucket or a bag to carry floral material home.
Towel
A towel to dry container, kenzan, and etc.
Refund requests must be submitted to the registrar by email ([email protected]) or by phone (630-719-2468) one full business day prior to the program start date.
Fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable within 24 hours the program’s start date. The Morton Arboretum cannot refund fees requested on or after the start date of a program or for sessions missed due to student illness or other personal situations.
Students will be issued a full refund in the event that The Morton Arboretum cancels a class for any reason.
