Reviews for Crochet Classes in Los Angeles

Crochet Classes in Los Angeles are rated 4.4 stars based on 124 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • Class was very knowledgeable. The teacher was pleasant and helpful
  • I loved it! Sofia was a wonderful teacher! I will definitely go to her for Sewing 2! Sofia was so patient with everyone! The machines worked great. That class size was perfect. Highly recommend.
  • Level 1 was great!
  • Is great ?
  • Great community of knitters learning alot
  • Absolutely loved the class! The instructor, Scarlet, was very efficient and knowledgeable. I was very happy with my finished project! Thank you.
  • Friendly and very patient instructor, big facility with cutting table and sewing machine room. I made a Kimono from choosing fabric, to cutting out a pattern, to sewing and trimming. I was even introduced to a Serger machine for detailed lining finish. As a novice sewer, I was so impressed and satisfied with what I learned, that I will definitely be back for sewing lab or project work.
  • I absolutely enjoyed Sewing Level 2. Melissa was so patient and helpful, she made the course material extremely easy to digest and easy to follow along. It's a lot of information but super straightforward and fun. A great foundation to start your sewing journey!
  • The instructor is very knowledgeable and makes the class interesting and fun.
  • Our instructor Melissa was truly amazing. So knowledgeable and such a pleasure to learn from. Loved her charisma and her amount of knowledge made the class really valuable. Thank you!
  • This class was so great and the instructor Melissa was wonderful. I’m looking forward to level 2!
  • Love the vibe of this place!! Amazing teacher! ❤️⭐️
  • Melissa Walker is such a fantastic teacher. She is incredibly knowledgeable about all things sewing, she's funny, and she made the classes a joy to come to each week.
  • The teacher was very knowledgeable and explained the concepts very clearly. She was patient, funny and told many interesting stories. I think if I bought my own sewing machine I would know how to start using it right away.
  • the course was really useful and well organized. The teacher, Ashley Trutanich, was amazing, both as a professional and a human being. She was very clear in explaining everything and always ready to help us, answering all our questions and showing us things as many times as we needed. The only downside was the duration. 2 hours didn't feel enough, 3 would have been perfect. I shared this thought with the other attendants and they agreed. When we moved to practice what Ashley was teaching us, we found ourselves in a rush. So basically we wanted more ^^
  • Sewing Made Easy was a great class. I have some experience with quilting, yet the class presented and reinforced basic sewing skills like basting, running stitch, and backstitch. I learned new stitches for hemming and mending. So the class strengthened and expanded my basic skills. Ashley was excellent about checking in with us to see where we were in terms of pace and if we needed to see something again. The class supplied sewing machines and I was impressed with how a person could show up and really get a good start--and also make a pillow in two classes! That was amazing. Every student had a lovely finished pillow at the end of the last class. Now I'm working on my own pillow project that is more complicated and Sewing Made Easy serves as a source of inspiration.
  • Great class. Just the refresher I needed. The instructor was great and met everyone where they were in their sewing journey. Highly recommended whether you are just starting out or just needed a reminder of sewing fundamentals.
  • Introduction to Home Serger Machine

The teacher was very knowledgeable, patient and helpful. This is a very good introductory serger class and highly recommend it.
  • Great Class learned a lot! Highly recommend and I’m coming back
  • Great experience! It was relaxed, informative and fun. I'm going to book another one on one class to finish the garment I started and to learn solid foundation skills.
  • Introduction to Home Serger Machine

Very professional and gave me a lot of detailed information. Instructor was very helpful and hands on. Friendly too. Super happy with what I learned. (:
  • This was honestly the BEST class I’ve ever taken. I felt so comfortable the whole time. Amazing vibes, and I’m SO excited for more! Can’t wait for my next class!!!
  • What a pity this class will no longer be offered. Please try to organise more
  • The instructor Jess was great! All the ladies from French General were wonderful. I had a great time!
  • Introduction to Home Serger Machine

This class was exactly what I needed to start using my serger again. It was a great overview on the capabilities of a serger as well as a practical experience with learning how to thread a serger. I would have liked it to include a simple “ make and take” project. However, the two hour class flew by. That’s when I realized I was truly enjoying the class. The next day I started using my serger without any trepidation.
  • Very patient teacher, great atmosphere.
  • I love it!!!!!!
  • Great teacher and awesome place
  • Mrs. Morrison was great! I took this course with my boyfriend and we both enjoyed the class and learned a lot. She showed us all the basics of sewing and I was able to ask her all the questions I had. She was also very personable and patient.
  • Alteration Workshop

This was a truly great class. My sewing skills were a little rustier than I thought, but the instructor was gracious enough to meet me at my level. The class was also super small - only 3 people so there was a lot of one on one attention, we got to shape the class a little and I learned a ton! I wish I would have had more time to prep and bring in the appropriate items to alter - I probably would have learned more, but that’s on me! We worked on shortening pants, taking in pants that are too wide in both the leg and the waist, taking in shirts that were too wide, shortening sleeves that are too long, installing different kinds of zippers, fixing zippers, and patching holes. All very useful! Also, if I were to do it over again, I would be sure to bring snacks and eat better beforehand. The 4 hours of class catch up to you especially if you are prone to hanger ;)
  • This class was amazing! I took the Botanical Specimens 101 class and absolutely loved it and this one took what we learned in that class to a whole new level. We incorporated a lot of the things from the 101 class into this class; however, if you aren't able to take the 101 you could still easily jump into the 102 class. The French General Store is a wonderful atmosphere to learn in and a source of inspiration where ever one looks. Kari is the ultimate hostess and her easy going and genially attitude infuse the store with warmth and joy. Ann Woods is an amazing teacher. She is patient, kind, funny and is excellent in providing instruction no matter how many times it is needed. If you have a chance to take a class at French General do so and if you get into a class with Ann Woods I would highly advise it. I look forward to coming back to many more classes at this wonderful little store.
  • I absolutely loved this class!!! I had no idea that the French General, a real gem, was basically right in my backyard. Kari, the owner and host of the class, was such a joy and the ultimate hostess. She created a warm and intimate classroom right inside her store. She had everything that a participant needed and she even curated a beautiful lunch and afternoon spread. Ann Woods, the teacher of the workshop, was equally as amazing. She was patient, funny and encouraging of every student. The instructions and guidance that she provided were perfect. I can't wait to take more classes at French General including more of Ann Woods and her workshops!
  • Sewing Made Easy I with instructor Rosy Espinoza was a great five week course! In the class we covered the basics slowly and thoroughly.
  • Very enjoyable class and the teacher Annette is amazing. She is very patient and willing to help with any and all questions. The store has a great vibe and they have really created a community that is supportive to those who crochet or knit even beginners. I look forward to signing up for my next session!
  • Ana is so helpful!! She brings tons of samples to class to demonstrate different techniques, and teaches you the methodology to create a sweater custom fit to your tastes. I’ll definitely be taking more classes in the future!!
  • Alteration Workshop

Loved the class. Matthew was a great instructor. I learned so much. I altered 5 pieces of clothing - the class paid for itself!
  • Wondefrul class. Loved the teacher
  • Tuesday is the BEST sewing instructor I've ever had. Better than what I've experienced at Joann's or inexpensive continuing ed classes at community colleges. Will be returning soon!
  • Tuesday is amazing and patient and so present with her students. We had the best time making clothes with her and it was so cool to walk away with something we can wear! Thank you Tuesday we will definitely be back!!
  • Great class , great teacher!! I can't believe that I actually know how to crochet after the first class!!
  • What a cool technique and excellent teacher!
  • Teacher was wonderful and very clear with her instructions. I liked the finished results as well!
  • I learned a lot about how to use my sewing machine and the basics of sewing in this class taught by Rosy. The project was to sew a little girl's dress, and I loved that it was somewhat challenging because, as I mentioned, I learned a lot more than I expected since I have very little experience sewing. I recommend taking this class for beginners.
  • Lenora was a great teacher. She gave directions clearly and was very patient. My classmates were sweet.
  • Excellent class. The teacher asdigned a very good project that taught a wide range of techniques. The teacher was very patient and took time to keep everyone on track.
  • The teacher Rosy was very knowledgable and took time to work with everyone individually. The project that Rosy chose for the class was challeging enough to give me the confidence to attempt any piece of clothing; but small enough to finish during the class period. I would recommend this class to anyone who thinks they cant sew.
  • I really enjoyed the class. The teacher Rebecca Prange, great teacher . The class was as described and I learned exact,y what I needed to learn. Looking forward to taking more courses through CourseHorse...you guys ROCK!
  • The instructor was fun and knowledgeable. Really enjoyed the wallet we made in class
  • The class was small enough for individual attention but large enough so you could see other people's work and compare to your own. Rebecca is knowledgable and is a great guide. SMC has great parking on the weekends and the classroom was a breeze to find.
  • Edgar is an awesome instructor! I would righly recommend this class!

Discover the Best Crochet Classes in Los Angeles

Crochet is a type of fiber art that, similar to knitting, involves using yarn to create textiles such as hats, mittens, scarves, blankets, dish towels, and baby items. Unlike knitting, however, which uses two large needles, crochet uses a single hook to loop stitches directly onto your fabric. Crochet hooks come in a variety of sizes and materials (plastic, wood, ergonomic, steel), just as yarn comes in various weights and types of materials (synthetic vs. natural). It's important to choose the correct size hook and yarn weight for your project; for example, larger projects such as afghans and rugs require heavier weight yarn and larger hooks, while delicate projects like lace, doilies, and baby items would require a smaller hook (wood being ideal to prevent yarn from slipping) and lighter weight yarn. Crochet patterns will guide you to what size hook and yarn to choose as well as the stitches needed for your project.

Why You Should Learn Crochet in Los Angeles

Are you looking for a fun and stress-reducing hobby? Crochet is a great activity for those who want to express their creativity through textiles, be productive in their free time, and create beautiful and functional items for themselves and others. Many people find the repetition of creating stitches to be meditative and even therapeutic. In addition to not being difficult to learn, it is also widely accessible due to the limited supplies needed to create beautiful handmade projects. While easy to learn, there is room for growth as individuals can challenge themselves with more difficult patterns and projects. Some crocheters have even found ways to turn their hobby into a lucrative side hustle by selling their items on websites like Etsy, Amazon Handmade, or Facebook Marketplace. If this doesn't appeal to you, your crocheted projects always make great gifts for many occasions and there are many organizations that accept donated crocheted items

In addition to being a fun hobby, learning to crochet will connect you to a larger community of fiber artists and crafters. You may be able to find local crochet clubs, where members gather to work on their projects and share crochet tips, through your library or Facebook Groups. Additionally, a national non-profit organization, The Crochet Guild of America (CGA) provides members the opportunity to attend crochet programs and exhibits, connect with others, and access a library of unique designs and patterns. You can also join a local chapter to connect with crocheters nearby and attend informative meetings. Your local CGA chapter can also connect you to charities that accept donated crocheted items such as afghan blankets and winter accessories.

In-Person Crochet Classes in Los Angeles

If you are looking to get started with crochet for the first time or are just beginning, The Knitting Tree has classes you can attend depending on your schedule: Beginning Crochet: Wednesdays and Beginning Crochet Sundays. In these classes, beginners will crochet a scarf, a hat, and a shawl while learning how to chain, form basic stitches, work in a round, and read a pattern and yan label. You will walk away with the knowledge to take on more advanced projects like garments and motifs. Students must purchase their own materials and will be given a 10% discount for items bought from The Knitting Tree. Located in Inglewood, The Knitting Tree is a community-focused store and workshop, offering a large variety of high-quality yarns and supplies for various fiber arts, as well as classes taught by experienced instructors.

In addition to crochet classes, The Knitting Tree offers the class Fixing Knitting Mistakes for beginners with some previous knowledge to learn how to fix their stitches when slip-ups happen. In this class, students will be guided on how to find and fix mistakes in a pre-knit swatch they are given. The class is a beginner-friendly class for students age 13 and older, but participants should be comfortable with knitting and purling. Students must provide their own supplies and can receive a 10% discount for items purchased at The Knitting Tree.

For another knitting class, individuals can attend Knitting at the Los Angeles City College in East Hollywood. This beginner-friendly class for men and women ages 18 and older introduces students to needle and string types, stitching patterns, how to cast on and cast off, and the knit and purl stitch. After five two-hour sessions, students will walk away with fun garments they have created by hand. Some materials required for the class include yarn, knitting needles, a sewing needle, and small scissors. Los Angeles City College offers lifelong learning classes for anyone in the community looking to expand their knowledge or just for a good time. Their Community Services offerings are noncredit classes taught by talented instructors with expert knowledge.

If you are interested in expanding your needlework repertoire, Los Angeles City College in East Hollywood also offers Sewing Made Easy Level 2, an intermediate class for those who have attended Sewing Made Easy. Students will start making their own garments in this class which includes a sewing machine review, learning how to read a pattern, and creating elastic waist shorts, crops, or pants in your size. Sewing machines and patterns are provided, but students must purchase their own supplies.

Fashion-oriented fiber artists can attend the class Beginning Sewing at The Workshop @ Haley Solar. In this beginner-friendly class for ages 10 and older, individuals will learn sewing basics such as how to thread and unthread your sewing machine. In the two-hour class, students will be guided from start to finish as they sew a tote bag. It is recommended to bring your own sewing machine and materials – so you can learn on your own equipment and apply your skills at home – but it is not required. The Workshop @ Haley Solar is located in the artistic neighborhood of Eagle Rock at the designer's own retail space and boutique. Haley and her design instructors teach classes with a focus on fashion, rather than crafting.

To expand on your fashion skills, you can attend Beginner Pattern Making at Lezu Studio to learn the basics of draping fabric over a dress form while paying attention to style lines, fit, and balance. In this four-session class, beginners aged 15 and older will be guided in draping and transferring muslin onto pattern paper to create a basic garment. Materials and supplies to use during class will be provided. Lezu Studio in Beverly Hills creates custom gowns for weddings and other formal occasions.

Virtual Crochet Classes

While in-person crochet classes often include attending class at a craft store, workshop, community center, or college, virtual classes can be taken from anywhere, as long as you have a computer and internet access. Virtual classes provide more options and flexibility since eliminating the commute may make it easier to fit a class into your schedule. Also, if you are traveling, you can still attend online crochet classes. A potential drawback to taking crochet classes online is that you often have to provide your own materials and supplies.

The class Crochet for Beginners offered by 92nd Street Y is an online class for individuals to learn the basics of crochet and master the skills needed to make scarves, hats, bags, and blankets. Projects completed in this class include a cell phone pouch and a stitch sampler scarf. Beginning Crochet is another beginner-friendly virtual crochet class, offered by School Products Yarn, for students to learn basic stitches and how to read a crochet chart while creating a scarf or neck warmer. For another type of fiber arts class, individuals ages 16 and older can take The Art of Contemporary Embroidery, offered by the Evanston Art Center. This is a beginner-friendly class for students to learn how to embroider an original piece using techniques such as mending, darning, sashiko, couching, and quilt-blocking. The virtual class is conducted over five sessions and participants must supply their own materials.
