Transforming Your Photographs

Los Angeles Center of Photography See all classes by this school @ 252 S Los Angeles St, Los Angeles, CA

Beginning in the 19th century, the earliest photographs were often tinted with paint, to make them more ‘life-like’. After the advent of color film in the 1950’s this was no longer necessary, so hand-coloring photographs became an interpretive, expressive art form, to make photographs more compelling and unique. In this workshop, you will be introduced to some digital techniques using Lightroom and Photoshop and output images on a variety...

Reviews for Photography Classes in Los Angeles

Photography Classes in Los Angeles are rated 4.4 stars based on 220 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • It exceeded my expectations. Sam was such a gifted and thoughtful teacher. 10/10
  • This teacher is good at helping people learn the basics of operating a camera so they can get started shooting.
  • Ming is a terrific teacher; I got exactly what I wanted from this class and enjoyed every minute.
  • Great class! The teacher really explains the basics in a way that sinks in.
  • This class is great! I learned so much. Matthew really helped me learn MY camera and I feel confident taking great photos. I highly recommend this class.
  • Really enjoyed the experience. Learning the controls and navigating the camera was what I wanted to accomplish by taking the course. Adding the next session which allowed me to experiment and apply techniques learned from the previous session was most beneficial to better understand the different aspects of the camera.
  • I purchased the Digital Photography Live-In-The-Field at the L.A. Arboretum course for my father for his birthday. He loved it! Mom had just bought him a high-end mirrorless camera, which was above his skill level since he had really only used a point-and-shoot in the past. So, to get him comfortable with his new camera in the field, I thought this course would be a good fit. Dad really enjoyed it and captured some beautiful nature shots and has since created some treasured family photo memories for us since taking this course. The instructor was very approachable, took his time with the students, and facilitated a fun and educational experience. Dad said he would definitely take this or a similar photography class from Coursehorse again, and I look forward to joining him next time, as I also am an amateur photog. This experience makes for a terrific gift. My parents are in their '70s, so I am finding that they value experiences over material items at this age. Therefore, classes from Coursehorse represent the perfect gift for them.
  • Loved this class! It's amazing how complicated digital cameras and photography are today. I learned so much in this class but still have a lot to learn. The teacher was really chill and made learning and asking questions stress-free.
  • The class was worth my time. The setting (Griffith Park Observatory) was perfect for instruction. The instructor was knowledgeable and helped me to understand how to make the most of the limited options available on my digital camera. I would recommend the course.
  • Such a fun course full of ideas and scenarios to try out. I learned so much from Scott about composition and technicals, like how to best use shutter priority or aperture priority, exposure compensation, etc. Really had such an amazing set of moments. If I could do a first-time class all over again, it would be this one.
  • Wonderful instructor and a great learning experience. I highly recommend the course.
  • David was so informative and very well articulated in explaining to a beginner like me on how to feel comfortable getting off the auto-mode. Great class and would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about photography.
  • Scott is a great instructor. He was very clear and explained everything really well. I am so glad I took his class. So much so I stayed for the next class, on composition. Had a great time and learned so much. I am looking forward to taking more classes at the Digital Photography Academy.
  • The size of the class was manageable; maybe 65 people. What I liked about the participants was that it was a diverse group of all ages & photo skills. What do you say about Sam? Incredible photographer; probably one of the greatest living photographers of his generation. And he was so generous in sharing about his work and his views. I was not only inspired, but I learned a few things. I also felt challenged. And that's as good as inspired. I only wish the lovely facility of LACP had adequate parking. Parking was a nightmare.
  • Really great for someone who wants to learn about lighting! David is great!
  • The class was great! The instructor was very patient and very knowledgeable. I would take this class again. I just wish they would not have switched the class room location on the last day of class. ELAC is the one that needs to make sure that doesn't interrupt the classroom venue in the future, for the sake of continuity. Other than that detail, all went well.
  • Really useful information. A great class!
  • The classes were both incredible informative and fun. Great chemistry. And since there were people from all levels of experience, the instructor did a great job of explaining things to the less experienced while making it still relevant to those of us who had more experience. All in all a great experience, and I signed up for another class immediately.
  • Jeromy is a wonderful teacher. My skills are limited and he has a kind and considerate way of explaining things in an easy and simple way without judgement. I will definitely take another class :) P.
  • Andre is a great videography teacher. He is full of wonderful stories, and makes the information easy to understand. Before walking into his class, I had a very limited idea of how to use my HDSLR for video. The other students seemed to be on the same wavelength as me, so that made the class fun. I feel like the shackle of auto has been removed. I have been recording in Manual thanks to Andre!
  • Absolutely LOVED this course I learned so much about studio lighting and how to work with different models. The hands-on experience was super valuable and instructor was fantastic.
  • Jeromy is an excellent photographer and teacher. The one-on-one setup of the course makes it easy to ask specific questions and get detailed answers that you can learn and practice hands-on— everything from camera settings to shooting techniques and more. I would recommend this course to photographers of varying backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Our teacher Raul Guereque was amazing and I HIGHLY recommend taking his class if you really want to get a good handle on the basics of shooting on a DSLR camera. On the first day of class he told us that we would never shoot on automatic again, and he was right! I have been using a DSLR camera for several years, and I learned more in the two weeks of taking his class, then i did in all the years prior combined. He was able to teach us the principles of using a DSLR (F-Stop, ISO, and Shutter Speed) in a way that was very digestible and easy to understand for any level. Then we were able to actually practice these principles out in the field, which made it even easier to understand. In two weeks, my photography skill level has changed tremendously, and now I feel a lot more confident and in control of my settings when using a DSLR. Take this class, and say goodbye to using automatic on your camera!
  • Exactly as advertised. The instructor was knowledgeable, friendly, accessible and we covered the perfect amount of material in the allotted time. I look forward to continuing my study of this subject.
  • This is an excellent introduction to stage lighting! Jam packed with material, and well explained. There are lots of things that lights are doing, whether on stage or in daily life. Once done with the class, you will notice those little things so much more and be excited to try to create all kinds of looks with lights. If you ever had to deal with lights as a producer, director, or lighting designer, this is a very useful introduction.
  • Learned so much, and had great fun doing it! I highly recommend!!
  • I would definitely recommend this class. I received some great pointers from Raul, he was easy to talk to and was happy to answer all my questions. So glad I took this class it has enhanced my street photography skills.
  • Become a Certified Professional Photographer

I would like to tell you how much I am enjoying your workshops. The lessons I have learned have greatly improved my photography skills and my confidence level. You have renewed my passion for photography!
  • Become a Certified Professional Photographer

Having taken a few classes at the California Center for Digital Arts, I have to say I am more than impressed! (I guess that is the reason I have taken multiple classes.) David La Neve and the other instructors have a passion for photography that is infectious.
  • Become a Certified Professional Photographer

If you were to line up the photos I've taken over the last 20 years on sequential order, you could see a very specific photo from which everything that follows shows marked improvement, a fresh style, and identity that no previous photo possesses. That's the first photo I took after learning from David LaNeve and his team at the Center. If you're considering a photo school in Orange County, I highly encourage you to try this one.
  • Jeromy was knowledgable and chose a great location to shoot in! I learned a lot, it was great fun and I would highly recommend it!
  • I love the class and got right What I wanted from it. The class was perfect. The teacher was great, funny, and educational. Every question asked was answered in a manner everyone in class could understand.
  • Santino is a great teacher. He is very patient and is very knowledgeable. I love the small class size too. You will get a lot of attention. I high recommend his photography class!
  • This class was great. Jennifer, the instructor, was very informative.
  • The instructor Larry Jones is amazing... I would highly recommend anyone who is trying to learn photography either for personal use or professionally to take the basics and the beyond basiscs with him.
  • Great course with an outstanding instructor. I learned a lot!
  • Raul was superb. Great teacher, very patient and knowledgeable. Fully recommend and good at getting the best out of each different skill level.
  • Mastering Manual Mode

Wonderful class, I learned a lot and really appreciate all your help. Avis:) Wrentmore
  • So cool, great class, great teacher
  • I really liked and enjoyed this class. It's very interesting and I I learned many tricks and knowledge I didn't know before
  • Great course. Learned some neat tricks for my iPhone to take better pictures along with going to great locations to practice my new skills.
  • Great class....Raul breaks it down without getting too technical making it easy to understand and follow. He makes sure that he can attend & give each participant his attention and help, as well as respond to each question. Raul even goes beyond class time to stay awhile & do more practice sessions & give additional tips & pointers. Thanks Raul!
  • Mastering Manual Mode

The class was very informative. I also learned a great deal from the various exercises we did in class. I asked Tip if I could have a copy of the information that was on the slides. In particular, the ones that provided the various examples and the ISO, Shutter speed, and Aperture that corresponded to each. I thought this would be really helpful for me but the slides weren't up long enough to copy the information. If this can be emailed to me, I would really appreciate it. Thank you! Margarita P.S. I'm planning to take the Boot camp offered after summer. Margarita
  • Raúl it's a great guy that knows a lot about photography, very professional. 2 classes was a great deal.
  • Great class!! Raul is an amazing teacher and explains everything in a way that it's very easy to understand. On top of that you get to practice shooting pictures and incorporating all the things you've learned. I loved it and i learned so much in a short amount of time.
  • Loved the class. The teacher was great. It was an amazing experience and I have no doubts in recommend the class to anyone with interests in photography!
  • First Look: Nikon Digital SLR

I loved the class. The teacher was amazing and I want to take more photo classes now .
  • 3Hr Beginner's Photography

Linsey was amazing. It was the best class I have ever taken, and that was my first photography class. It was like having a preschool teacher/best friend teach. By that I mean Linsey broke things down in a way that makes sense. I can't wait to sign up for another class!
  • 3Hr Beginner's Photography

Lindsey was a great, patient and knowledgable teacher. I really enjoyed taking her class, and would definitely recommend her to others. In fact, I already have! :] Thanks again. Kindly, Crystal
  • 3Hr Beginner's Photography

Lindsey was a great instructor. I learned so much and can't wait to put my knowledge into use.

Discover the Best Photography Classes in Los Angeles

Almost everyone knows how to take a picture at the most basic level, but what about going beyond that level? Many of us have cell phones or even a basic camera that we use to take the occasional selfie or family photo. Still, there are so many more layers of learning photography and probably many features you aren’t using on your camera; this is part of what makes photography so fascinating.

Why You Should Learn Photography in Los Angeles

If you’ve ever been to Los Angeles, then you know they have some pretty “Instagrammable” places, so finding a source of inspiration in this city should be easy. Having a lovely backdrop might not be the only reason to get into photography, but it makes it easy to shoot a stunning photo when surrounded by art. Aside from being an easy-to-shoot location, Los Angeles, the City of Angels, is known for bringing it all together. Joining other ambitious photographers in LA might be all you need to do to achieve this idea. Learning photography can help you find a new network of friends or even colleagues to discuss your ideas, trade industry secrets with, or learn from. Finally, California also is known for celebrities, Hollywood, music, and movies. Tapping into this skill could give you access to a lucrative career in this popular industry. Whether it’s for the glam of Hollywood, the connection with new friends, or the inspiration from Venice Beach, Los Angeles is a great place to learn photography.

In-Person Photography Classes in Los Angeles

In Basic Photography—Part 1, students can anticipate learning basic camera operation, all the controls and functions on their digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera, and the fundamental photography concepts. Students can also expect to engage in meaningful discussions about essential photography concepts such as composition and light, how to stop or blur motion, when to use a tripod, and appropriate lenses for a desired effect. The course is divided into six sessions, each session is 3 hours long. This course is in-depth and covers a lot of content. The instructor gives weekly assignments and provides feedback during the next class session, a great way to improve your skills and grow. Students are expected to own a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) or a Mirrorless camera.

The Crash Street: A One-Day Adventure, also offered as LACP, is an exciting class that provides a full eight hours of the basics of street photography. Students can expect to hear about many topics, including how to find great backgrounds, approach the people they want to shoot, and use their instinct when shooting. In addition, this course will have lectures, sessions out in the field, and group critique. While The Crash Street is for all levels, students are expected to know how to shoot in manual mode on their cameras. At $295, you can expect an inspiring day of learning and picture-taking.

Digital Photo Academy (DPA) is a photography school with numerous locations in multiple states. DPA is known for small class sizes that group students with colleagues of similar skill levels to keep the classes exciting and welcoming. For example, you could find a Master Your Digital Camera Controls (Los Angeles) class for $81 at the Long Beach location. Much like the title suggests, this class will help students learn the ins and outs of their camera and takes place in four sessions at an hour and a half each. It’s best to take this course if you just purchased a Digital SLR Camera/ Point and Shoot camera and you want to learn how to make simple creative changes to improve your photos. This class has a 5-star rating, so you can anticipate learning a lot while having a good time.

After mastering the basics, you might be interested in another class DPA offers, Digital Photography Live In-the-Field @ Long Beach. This all-day course provides students the opportunity to learn composition and camera setting expertise. Students will spend this three-hour session learning how to shoot strategically after training in the foundations of improving their photos. A DPA instructor will guide students through various photogenic locations throughout Long Beach. You’ll walk away from this session with great images, knowledge, and possibly new friends. This live-in-the-field course is also offered at other California locations such as Hollywood, Griffith Park, and Santa Monica Pier, allowing you to experience any of these iconic locations through your camera lens.

Virtual Photography Classes

Suppose you aren’t particularly interested in driving to classes, taking photos in the streets, or prefer your own space; online photography classes might be better for you. It is salient to consider that taking a course online instead of in-person could limit your ability to connect with new artists and could be a little challenging if you want to take more candid, in-the-field shots. Virtual photography classes still provide a lot of great options.

Still Life Lighting Basics is a great virtual course that will help you learn the basics of still life. It’s an all-day course that works through lighting with natural light and creative lighting methods at home. Students then spend four hours taking their photos in their homes while asking the instructor questions through Zoom, the final two hours of this eight-hour day are spent getting critiques of your work.

You could also take a Creative Solutions for Mid-Career Photographers seminar from the comfort of your home. The seminar is 90 minutes and will help students understand the business of photography, learn new photography techniques, and closely examine the work of other professional photographers. Students can expect a 60-minute lecture and 30 minutes of a moderator-guided question-and-answer series. This webinar is great for all levels of expertise and is a great way to get feedback on your current work.

If you want to design your photo book, Self-Publish & Design Your Own Photo Book—Level I is a great course. It’s broken into four sessions, and at $775, you will gain a great deal of knowledge. Students need to bring 12-15 related images to learn how to sequence and be prepared to discuss design considerations. The course explores what makes a good book design, how to develop a framework for your own book project, editing, typography, and cover design. These classes are proof that you can still gain knowledge without being in-person.

Private Group Photography Classes in Los Angeles

Private group classes are a great option to connect with others without leaving your home. CourseHorse offers live online group classes and even the ability to tailor to your needs. For example, if there are no private group photography classes in Los Angeles listed on their site right now, don’t let that be a deterrent. If you want to plan your own virtual group activity, you can contact their free event planning team, and they will do all the work.
