Best Vegan Cooking Classes in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a great place to learn how to cook, especially vegan meals, so if you are considering taking a cooking class, there's no better time to start. There are many levels to learning to cook, from learning how to waste less food and making a fantastic meal from what you have or learning how to make all your ingredients from scratch and making a vegan version of your favorite meal. Whatever excites you about learning how to cook, use that as the first step to signing up for a class.

Why You Should Learn Vegan Cooking in Los Angeles

Learning to cook in Los Angeles can have many benefits. First, cooking your food allows you to control the ingredients. Consider this, when you buy food from a restaurant, you have no control over the ingredients. Cooking your vegan food at home lets you control how fresh the ingredients are and how much added salt or sugar is in the food, and you can choose fresh versus processed foods. Containing the ingredients means healthier, homemade meals or the option to make the meal unhealthy on your own.

Also, cooking food can be fun. Learning to cook can be your new hobby. It can relieve stress and help you be productive. Some describe cooking as meditation, simply focusing on the ingredients and recipe to create a great meal. Finally, vegan food can be expensive, mainly eating at vegan restaurants in Los Angeles. Learning how to cook can save you money. It might initially feel costly, especially if you need to buy ingredients and cooking tools. It also might feel time-consuming because you must find the recipe and purchase the items. In actuality, it's more expensive to eat out each night. Cooking at home also means you'll likely have leftovers. What would have been one meal at a restaurant, cooking at home could sometimes give you leftovers for at least 2-3 nights.

In-Person Vegan Cooking Classes in Los Angeles

Finding an in-person vegan cooking class in Los Angeles should be simple. There are quite a few options. For example, CocuSocial Cooking Classes in Orange County offers events at local hotels and restaurants. You can learn how to cook everything from pasta or sushi, and baking a pizza. The Make Your Own Sushi class is $62 and teaches students how to spread, layer, tuck and roll your sushi. While this course shows you how to prepare Spicy tuna and California rolls, learning the basics as a vegan can still be beneficial. This class is designed to be casual and fun. No experience is required, and you can be as involved as you choose.

SunCafe Organic Cooking Classes, located in Studio City, is another excellent location. They are known for their healthy, organic meals and have been voted #3 in the world by BestOfRaw. SunCafe knows its healthy foods. They offer a Thai Cuisine class in Studio City for $40. The course is set up in a Demonstration Format so that you can expect a fun and joyful experience. Each plant-based class also starts with an overview of the health benefits of vegan and raw food, and while tasting the food at the end, students are encouraged to ask questions. The menu includes Thai Red Curry Vegetables, Pad Thai, and Tom Kha, and all classes are gluten-free and soy-free.

SunCare also offers a Dessert (No Nuts/No Added Sugar/ Fat Free) cooking class. You can anticipate how much fun this class will be because who doesn’t love dessert? Students can expect to learn to make apple pie, banana crepes stuffed with fresh jam, low-fat brownies, and a banana ice cream sundae. The dessert class is set up in the SunCare Demonstration Format, and students get to end the class with four desserts to choose from, or all of them!

The Foodery, located in San Francisco, is another Los Angeles cooking school. Started by Chef Daniel Morduchowicz has been in LA for the past 35 years and has been exposed to the diverse cuisines the city has to offer. The Foodery provides a Scrumptious Vegan Food Class: A Feast for Your Senses; the name tells it all. At $99 per person, this class will take students through a 3-course meal. The appetizer includes homemade falafel and tahini sauce inside pita bread pockets, with tomatoes, cucumbers, and other farmer’s market ingredients. Next is the quinoa salad with oranges, dried fruits, baby spinach, and nuts, dressed with aged balsamic and olive oil. The main dish is gluten-free and vegan ravioli stuffed with vegan “ricotta” and swiss chard—finally, a dessert of frozen watermelon granita triangles with a cardamom glaze. While making these delicious meals, students will also learn basic knife skills and basic cooking principles and techniques. Classes are BYOB, and students can enjoy their beverages, alcohol included, during the class and dinner.

Virtual Vegan Cooking Classes

If in-person classes are not what you are looking for right now, you could always take an online vegan cooking class. It is essential to consider the differences between in-person and virtual, though. First, taking a course online gives you the freedom and flexibility to take a class from anywhere as long as you have a computer. Taking a lesson from anywhere means you don’t need to miss your class if you are on vacation or have to work later. The freedom to take a class from anywhere, at any time, can increase the likelihood that you will attend classes as scheduled because there is no excuse. Related to that, taking a lesson from anywhere means no commute.

Suppose you are registered for an online course, log in to your computer and be prepared to learn. Los Angeles is known for many things, and traffic is one of them. Cutting out the commute time by taking a virtual class means no more sitting in traffic or paying for parking saving you time and money. Finally, taking a course online gives you access to more types. Let’s say you’re interested in a great cooking class, but it’s impossible to attend because it’s across town; this is an excellent opportunity to consider a virtual option. More class options mean perfecting your vegan cooking skills sooner and a chance to expand your cooking skills.

On the other hand, when considering a virtual vegan class, it’s important to note some challenges with them too. One challenge is materials and equipment. If you take a virtual class, you will likely need to purchase your materials, which can be costly. When taking a class in-person, supplies and cooking materials such as pots, pans, or even a food processor are usually included. Another challenge with online courses for some is the limited connection with an online class. In-person students can connect during downtime, or asking the instructor a question can be more accessible. It is challenging to do this naturally, but it can be done online. Some instructors make a point to ensure students connect at the end of class by eating meals together virtually and making time for students to ask clarifying questions to help them feel comfortable with their work too.

If you are looking for a more interactive online course, you can try the Indian Cooking Online w/ Yamini course. Yamini designed the course to make you feel like you are in her home while cooking. The class will teach students how to make handmade flatbreads stuffed with spiced potatoes, onions, and refreshing cucumber and yogurt raita. In this 2.5-hour interactive class, students will be guided through making these three family recipes and then attend a virtual dinner party. Students must supply their one materials, but a shopping list is provided in advance.

Finally, if you are looking for a more functional class, the Cook with What You Have course is offered at Teaching Table. This class was designed to teach students how to shop less, cook more, and waste nothing. The class also includes concise instructional videos, independent practice, four live questions, and answer sessions on Zoom. Students will be connected to a community of others cooking with what they already have in their fridges. Taking this course is a great way to become a vegan cook while using what you have and increasing your confidence.
