Class Description

Description

Join artist & educator, Jotham Hung, for an in depth exploration of mid-range glaze

application and an introduction to glaze chemistry. Participants will learn how to create their own base glaze, create crawling glazes and work with a variety of colourants. Jotham will cover a range of techniques for glaze application including brushing, dipping and pouring glaze along with oxide decoration and washes.

Each participant will receive 6-8 test tiles of cone 5 b-mix to create their own test tiles in the first week. In the second week we will discuss the results and participants can bring in 2-3 bisqued pieces of their own to glaze in class (max dimensions 6x6x6"). The goal of this workshop is to help participants achieve more confidence, creativity, and variety in their own glazing process.

Participants can expect to learn:

  • Mixing a white matte base glaze from raw materials.
  • Mixing a white crawl glaze & how to add in colorants - cobalt carbonate (blue), nickel carbonate (light green/jade), black mason stain (black), pink mason stain (pink)
  • Creating oxide washes - black iron oxide, red iron oxide, rutile & copper carbonate

All basic tools and materials are supplied. Participants will need to supply their own respirator and are welcome to bring their favorite tools. A small notebook and pen is also encouraged for recording. All pieces we fire to cone 5 and participants can expect to leave with their fired pieces in the last class.
