Reviews for Writing Classes in Los Angeles

Writing Classes in Los Angeles are rated 4.5 stars based on 142 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • The course was taught with good pace, it got you into the rhythm of writing through different exercises which is the biggest hurdle to overcome. Good examples and explanations from existing movies helped put concepts in perspective and made them easy to apply to our own writing. MIchael was a great help throughout and provided lots of resources for us.
  • I loved the class!! I absolutely loved the class and ended up not only taking the teachers second course but also her 21 week pilot program class. Def a really great experience
  • Great class. Easy to follow instructions Engaging presentation Thoughtful feedback.
  • Michael Morris (Instructor) was excellent. Class curriculum was also well laid out for this schedule. I enjoyed it very much.
  • Michael Morris did a wonderful job teaching about screenwriting. He broke down the beats of a story for a screenplay. I will be taking his advanced class.
  • Great class. I knew almost nothing about TV writing before, but now I feel like I know enough basics to move forward on my own.
  • It was such a great class! Rebekah Walendzak Slepski is an amazing teacher. So funny, so professional and informative. Top notch!
  • The teacher was awsome. I felt that some portals just opened in my life and I am very interested to do new classes.
  • Mr. Thomas G. Provided thorough presentations for the lessons. He sent out assignments with videos that pertained to what we were learning, the visuals gave clarity to what is expected of us. He cared about us grasping the information. That stood out the most. ✨
  • Great teacher! Great course!
  • It was a good class. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun doing so. The instructor really broke down the patterns in how funny material is made. He also created an environment that made it easy to participate.
  • This was THE BEST CLASS I ever took. Ryan is an excellent teacher. His passion and dedication to what he does is extremely contagions. At the end of each class none of us wanted to leave. Ryan always stayed after class to answer all our questions. We all felt very saddened that the class ended and suggested that he should also teach TV Drama II.
  • Carol, was excellent! She was patient, encouraging, and insightful. She seemed genuinely happy to teach the class.
  • Great workshop - I learned a lot that I can apply to my my day to day at work.
  • Excellent for someone who had no background and is curious about writing a novel. Great class dynamic.
  • It was very informative and Anna Scott was a great instructor. I learned a ton and can't wait to start my podcast.
  • Carol was a fantastic teacher!
  • Love it! Learned so much!
  • Matt, the instructor, was encouraging and supportive during the screenwriting process. He gave awesome us notes that helped to shape our pilot.
  • Absolutely loved this class!
  • An amazing class - really got a lot out of it. One note - the last class is a 20 minute 1:1 with the teacher. I would've liked to have a longer 1:1 session but I was able to develop my Personal Essay skills exponentially in a matter of a few weeks.
  • Anita is amazing!! She's incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about memoir and I left the course feeling so much more confident about continuing with my own writing. Also, she did a beautiful job at making us a very cohesive group where feedback was shared in a genuine and protected space. It was a wonderful and unforgettable experience. I look forward to taking a course with her again.
  • Six-week Fiction Writing Workshop

“This is the best writing class in Los Angeles. Having taken literally a hundred writing classes over the years, all across the country, I can assure you that only a handful are any good. Getting a spot in Jonathan’s fiction writing workshop is like getting to attend an elite graduate-level class with the best of the best. It’s like having the Iowa Writers’ Workshop come to you. Jonathan’s rare, thoughtful approach and innate brilliance will change you as a writer. Already I have had a short story turned into a draft of a novel and another short story published. Jonathan has helped me move my work to the next level.”
  • This class was a fantastic way to learn how to write in memoir style or improve upon your technique. It’s great for beginners and experts alike and Anita is a really constructive and helpful teacher. I wish it was longer or there was a part two to this course!
  • Excellent Format and teacher
  • Enjoyed the class very much and thought the teacher was great. I would definitely do another class with Brett.
  • Lots of important information delivered concisely and clearly. The tone of the class is inviting and generous. I will recommend Pilar’s classes to other writers. She is doing important work for the TV industry and for the writers who want to enter that creative world. Her guest was top notch as well. I feel lucky to have had a chance to take it.
  • TV Spec 2: TV Spec Draft Writing Workshop

I've taken classes from both Lauren and Steph and both were exceptional teachers, offering constructive criticism without seeming harsh or patronizing (something you might get from published authors). The people who run this take a real interest in seeing writers grow. They listen to their students and do their best to make the space comfortable. They have snacks.
  • TV Spec 2: TV Spec Draft Writing Workshop

The writing pad offers a fantastic variety of writing classes. It's run by a very nice and helpful couple who would always make you feel at home and your concerns heard. I continuously take classes at the writing pad, because they're awesome!
  • TV Spec 2: TV Spec Draft Writing Workshop

I've taken several classes with Writing Pad. I've taken classes with showrunners (Nastaran Dibai, Joey Gutierrez, and Michael Saltzman, ) and worked on outlines and drafts, and then taken a couple of comedy revision classes, both great. The one with Craig Gerard was useful, fun, and the class really bonded. The one with Todd Waldman I liked because he has a development background as well to give another angle. I especially liked that he encouraged people to bring back work if they could to revisit the changes that had been suggested in other classes. I found the instructors here bring real world experience and give great notes and suggestions. It's also helpful to hear what other writers have to say. It's definitely a place where you benefit from the community as well as the instructors. I took an essay class with Christopher Noxon, who is fantastic as well - I really want to take his illustrated journal class. Marilyn and Jeff really work at creating a community, and getting great people in. I've read a couple of the negative reviews, and it sounds like people had an expectation about what they'd get, but for me I've learned from every class I've had. The few people who seem dissatisfied/disinterested in the classes are the ones who don't show up for anyone else, have their stuff read and leave, and don't participate unless it involves their stuff - that's been what I've seen in taking several classes.
  • I took a 6-week TV Drama class with Pat Charles at Writing Pad and the experience was worth every penny and more. My classmates were all very serious about their writing, which is a major plus in my book because everyone was there to work hard. We had a great group dynamic of very diverse voices. Pat's direction and feedback were simply awesome. It was a tough class because Pat will push you the way any show runner would in a real writing room. The tools I learned have made me much more critical of my writing in a very constructive way. I look forward to taking another Writing Pad class in the future!
  • I LOVE Writing Pad. The past couple of months I have done several classes there. I've been doing Memoir Writing with Brett Paesel, Comedy screenwriting with Devanshi Patel and Drama writing with Dailyn Rodriguez. All three of these classes have taught me so much about craft. These three women are all so generous and so skilled. I can't believe how much energy and insight they have for each student's writing. They are able to see each project on its own terms and offer extremely useful feedback, ideas and advice. I came into this from a mainly playwriting background, wanting to learn about writing for television and memoir and I am thrilled with how much I've learnt. I also really appreciate being made to write stuff! I find as a writer, one of the things that's hardest is making myself write. Doing classes at Writing Pad makes me write constantly! I would recommend taking classes to writers of all levels of experience. I'm thrilled with what I'm learning and really enjoy the classes and talking to the other students. Marilyn and Jeff, who run Writing Pad are a delight, as are all the staff there. I am doing Brett and Devanshi's classes next year too. I wish I'd started doing classes at Writing Pad as soon as I first moved to LA a year ago.
  • Great introduction to writing ✍️ for TV
  • I got so much out of this. I wish I could enroll in another right away. Please make it 8 weeks. Thx
  • The course was very hands-on. I would reccomend to a friend. I learned more than expected in this course. The teacher was exceptional too.
  • From Idea to Script- A Hands On Screenwriting Retreat

The idea to script class is an immersion into writing, beginning with viewing and analyzing a film so that story structure is applied to the film you are viewing. You spend the second writing, indexing and getting a good start on the project in a holistic, gentle way for a person who has never written for screen or has been read all over town.
  • Words & Music - A Weekly Musical Theatre Workshop

Mark Saltzman's superb knowledge of musical theater never ceases to amaze me. He is so generous and eager to help each one of us perfect our piece. He takes the time to understand us and guide us. Not one of those teachers who rambles on about his own work, Mark urges us to push ourselves, to better ourselves, to progress.
  • Mike is amazing at what he does and relaying it to his students. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to working with him again. Thanks!
  • I have not attended a writing class in many many years and was a bit hesitant about what was going to happen. I found the class to be outstanding and very informative. I would take the class again and learn more as there was so much valuable information. The teacher was outstanding. Take it! Karen
  • Really good group. Very friendly and positive. Defiantly would recomend.
  • Write That Spec Script Now - Televison Writers Workshop

Mark Brown is hilarious, knowledgeable and engaging. He provides a safe and fun environment for students to share their thoughts and ideas with one another and his feedback is always constructive and honest! I highly recommend this class!
  • Write That Spec Script Now - Televison Writers Workshop

This was a great class, great teacher, way more affordable than most places. super impressed!
