The Advanced Wheel pottery class is designed for students and members who have completed both Wheel Level 1 and Wheel Level 2 and are ready to develop techniques for creating forms beyond basic cylinders and bowls. The class content is student-directed, with demonstrations selected by class participants at the beginning of each month. Because instruction responds to student interests and skill levels, the Advanced Wheel class varies from month to month, offering fresh learning opportunities each session.
Possible topics include throwing from the hump, creating jars with fitted lids, combining multiple forms, crafting plates, constructing closed forms, and more advanced sculptural techniques. This flexible approach ensures that each class meets the current needs and goals of participating students.
Age Requirements: You must be 18 years or older to register for the class independently. Students ages 14 and older may participate when accompanied by an adult member or experienced student of the studio.
Materials and Preparation:
Clay is NOT included with course tuition and must be purchased separately from the studio. Non-members are responsible for taking clay home; the studio is not responsible for tools or clay materials left behind by students.
- Please arrive about 10 to 15 minutes early to prepare and set up
- Wear casual, comfortable clothing and shoes that you do not mind getting soiled with clay. The clay used washes out of fabric with regular laundering, but glazes and other materials may be less forgiving
- Bring an apron if you have one, along with a towel for cleanup
- Trim your fingernails short, as long nails significantly hamper throwing on the wheel and shaping clay, and prevent you from achieving quality results
- Remove all jewelry, including rings, watches, and bracelets, as these will interfere with your work on the wheel
- If you have long hair, bring an elastic or hair tie to secure it up, which is essential to prevent accidents and injuries on the spinning wheel
