What you'll learn in this painting class:

A typical class has three to six individuals painting at different levels: from those beginning to use watercolor, who have some experience or taken classes in drawing or painting, to those familiar with various water media, who enjoy working in a mentoring relationship to develop a body of work, pursue commissions, exhibitions, artist residencies, or grant opportunities.

The new student will begin by working toward an understanding of traditional watercolor fundamentals through exercises in color, composition and technique and will be expected to experiment with a wide variety of subject matter and styles, with the goal of ultimately developing and working from their own source material.

Additional workshops in drawing, the figure and oil painting are occasionally featured. Ongoing with the classes will be opportunities to visit the Art Institute’s Print and Drawing department, to study watercolors from their collection, as well as view other relevant exhibitions in museums and galleries in the Chicago area.

Please Note: Beginners with no previous drawing or painting instruction who are interested in attending class should contact the instructor prior to registration. While classes are small and taught with individual instruction, students should be self-directed, willing to put in the necessary practice time during and outside of class, and feel they would like to be part of this kind of studio environment and interaction.

Question from Christopher E.
Is it only watercolor? I want an place to paint in acrylic
Answer from anonymous
Thanks for your inquiry into classes. Unfortunately, I don't work in acrylic, and therefore don't feel like I'd be the one to give you the best possible instruction. In and around Chicago, I think you'd be able to find acrylic classes at: LIllstreet, Evanston, or Hyde Park Art Centers. My classes are watercolor/gouache, with occasional workshops in drawing or oil, the participants of which are almost drawn from within the classes.
