Jewelry making involves the design and creation of various decorative items – such as earrings, bracelets, and brooches, among others – with the tension to be worn. There are many different materials jewelry can be made from, such as metals, stones, beads, glass, clay, plastic, and much more. Just as there are many materials from which to make jewelry, working with each material comes with its own unique techniques and tools. While learning jewelry making may seem like a daunting process, the craft has many points of entry for pure beginners that are not expensive or complicated.
Many people find that engaging in a creative hobby increases their happiness and sense of accomplishment. For some people, the physical motions of crafting empty the mind and have a meditative effect that releases stress. This combined stress release and increase of dopamine can reportedly strengthen one’s immune system. The effect of a hobby on mental health can be highly beneficial.
Starting a new hobby can help you connect with people who enjoy the same craft and make new friends. These friends can support you through the hobby by offering advice and being a source of motivation and inspiration. Having your own community of support to turn to has been known to increase happiness and decrease feelings of isolation. It’s also possible through these hobby connections that you form strong personal connections and make true real-life friendships.
Starting a new hobby can also help you discover a new passion and source of extra income. For some people, the drive to engage in their passion motivates them to start a side hustle that in turn helps them cover the costs of their crafting supplies. Others become so skilled in their craft that their passion can support them through part-time or full-time income.
Online classes are popular for their accessibility. Students can learn from wherever they choose, be it their home, work office, coffee shop, or another favorite study area. Online classes often offer multiple scheduling options. Students can also find more topic choices through online classes than in-person courses since they aren’t limited to classrooms physically near them. There’s also no commute required through online courses.
While online courses may sound ideal, they aren’t for everyone. Online courses often require students to provide their own materials or equipment. Some topics don’t translate as well to online instruction as they do for in-person classes. For example, jewelry making online courses might involve a live video walkthrough of the process of the craft but students don’t have the opportunity to perform the craft themselves and follow along with their instructor as they might in a physical classroom.
CourseHorse offers a virtualHammered Earring class. Participants meet over Zoom to view a live demonstration of the craft. Students learn how to forge, solder, craft findings, and finish earrings. The course also features a live forum for students to ask questions. A materials list is provided at the end of the class for students to perform the craft on their own.
The Wax Carving Course teaches students how to craft wax models for casting items such as pendants for jewelry. A supply list is provided before the start of class so students can follow along with the instructor should they wish. The class is available for all skill levels.
Businesses and organizations interested in team building exercises can schedule private online jewelry making classes. Team building events are excellent activities for building communication and planning skills among your team members. Encouraging employees to engage in entertaining tasks can also boost personal motivation, creativity, and productivity. CourseHorse provides live online group classes for team building and collaboration.
In the Virtual Polymer Clay Jewelry class, groups learn basic techniques for crafting jewelry pieces out of polymer clay. The class is open to all skill types, with the ability to create both simple and complex designs. Possible creations include earrings, brooches, and keychains, among others.
Virtual Clay Marbling Workshop isn’t specifically about crafting jewelry but the skills learned within could certainly apply to the hobby. Participants learn simple techniques for working with polymer clay and crafting beautiful plates and bowls. The class is ideal for pure beginners to working with clay.
These courses also save your guests the time and hassle of gathering the necessary materials. Once you sign up for a course, CourseHorse will take care of the rest and ship the necessary supplies and materials to all of your guests free of additional charge. This ensures that you won’t have to worry about whether or not attendees will have the supplies they need to participate.
There are no additional booking fees to scheduling group courses with CourseHorse. Group sizes can be changed and courses can also be canceled without a fee so long as notice is given at least two weeks in advance. CourseHorse supports multiple platforms beyond Zoom. Additional fees apply if you wish to customize any course or if you would to schedule a course demo. Confirmation of your reservation is provided to you within 24 hours of booking.
There is much to consider when choosing to attend an in-person or online class. In-person courses are often considered the more personal option as students can interact more directly with the instructor. However, online classes often work to replicate this interactivity with live instruction and online tools. Online classes have the advantage of being available anywhere so long as the participant has a reliable internet connection while physical courses require a commute that can be time consuming as well as costly. Available schedules are another factor to consider between online and in-person classes, with online courses often providing more options.
While some online crafting classes provide materials to participants ahead of time so they can follow along with the instructor, others only offer a virtual demonstration with a supply list offered after class so students can replicate what they’ve seen on their own. If being able to participate in hands-on projects during class is important to you, you should review available online courses carefully.
The short answer is: yes. It is possible to find free tutorials and informative jewelry making videos online. These videos are commonly found via skill-sharing websites, such as Youtube, Udemy, Coursera, SkillShare, and many others. The downside to these videos is the lack of an instructor to turn to for questions or assistance. And many free courses aren’t as comprehensive as a formal class can be. Many people find they learn better and faster when receiving training from an expert.
