Reviews for Painting Classes Online

Painting Classes Online are rated 4.6 stars based on 1,093 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • Really enjoyed the 3 week course. Raphael is a great artist & teacher. I didn’t have much experience with charcoal before but learned a ton and felt great about the piece i worked on in the class. Learned a lot about proportions and identifying values & shadows. Would definitely recommend!
  • Judith was great! Can’t do next session, but will be back! M
  • I enjoyed this course and learned so much. I am thrilled with the paintings I created. The demo lessons were easy to follow and the skills learned have given me more confidence in my abilities.
  • It was really fun! The instructor was very understanding and patient and I ended up with a painting that I was very proud of. I would definitely take the course again.
  • I loved the class, I learned a lot of things because I am a new learner in this subject, but I needed more time to take more notes
  • Linda was a great instructor, very creative and versatile in different techniques. Fun class to learn about beginning chalk pastels.
  • Anjl was a wonderful teacher! Her instructions were given in way that was easy to understand and remember. She also gave the kindest feedback/suggestions I've ever received. I definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a painting instructor.
  • Allison is a fabulous instructor.
  • Raphael is an exceptional art teacher! His classes are a perfect blend of skill-building and artistic exploration. He possesses a deep understanding of various art techniques and has a knack for explaining them in a clear and engaging way. What's more, his lessons are enriched by his vast knowledge of art history. He effortlessly weaves in fascinating insights about the origins of these techniques and the historical context in which they were developed, giving us a deeper appreciation for the art we create. What sets Raphael apart is his ability to nurture individual talent. He takes the time to understand each student's unique strengths and interests, providing personalized guidance and encouragement. He fosters a supportive and inspiring classroom environment where everyone feels comfortable experimenting with their art. Beyond technique, Raphael fosters a true understanding of art. He encourages us to think critically about the art we see and create, to analyze its meaning and impact. He opens our eyes to different artistic styles and movements, helping us to develop a well-rounded perspective. Raphael's passion for art is contagious, I highly recommend Raphael to anyone seeking to ignite and develop their artistic abilities, unlocking their creative potential. He is a truly gifted teacher who makes learning an enriching and enjoyable experience.
  • This class is a wonderful space for anyone who enjoys art and wants to begin working on their drawing and painting skills. Raphael is an amazing teacher who really understands beginners and knows how to approach them and their way of thinking. He's super knowledgable about the history of art, and it's just a pleasure being in the space that he's created. Before taking Raphael's classes, I did some sketching at home, but without actually being familiar with any drawing techniques, so I've taken 5 or 6 classes in this studio. In the beginner class, Raphael focuses on composition (which is super helpful because knowing how to start a drawing can be really difficult), shading (values/tones/what it means to give shape to an object and that erasing is also a part of painting), what an iterative process creating art is, and simply how to approach/understand/appreciate a work of art. Raphael encourages different mediums such as charcoal and pastels, neither of which I'd been exposed to before - it's been great learning how powerful both of these are. Also, the class takes place in an atelier filled with so many paintings, which I find really cool.
  • Painting in Watercolor Level 2 is at least a 5 experience. The teacher leads you through doing a complete painting and on the way you learn new techniques and ways to approach painting things
  • I took this class for a mental break from my job, and it ended up being a wonderful choice! The class is informative, and Raul was very helpful and encouraging throughout the process. You will learn a lot and expand your artistic knowledge in a very relaxed, easy-going environment.
  • I took the class along with my son. We really enjoyed it and learned a lot. We learned about technique and also to enjoy the process. Great class and instructor!
  • I really enjoyed the course. Directions were fun and easy to follow and the teacher and classmates were welcoming and engaging. I would recommend to anyone looking to take the next step in their craft.
  • Splendid.
  • Thought teacher covered the basics of painting in watercolors extremely well. She always touched base with the class on their progress and very open to our questions
  • Loved the class and Anna the instructor. Well worth the money. My husband and I enjoyed the time together and learning the basic techniques.
  • The instructor was kind patient and personable
  • Never thought I could paint watercolor in one lesson but was able to follow the teacher and I did pretty well!
  • Linda is a joy to have as an instructor! Learning many basics missed in other classes I’ve taken and finding it very valuable.
  • I have never been good at drawing and was skeptical as I signed up for this course. Surprisingly, I learned a lot. The instructor was very accessible and taught in a very structured, clear way and I actually learned to paint and learned something about mixing colors and in general feel much more comfortable about my abilities. I would have liked to continue but I believe the instructor went to Europe at the end of the class. I would give the experience a 4.5, simply because I would have preferred to do it in person.
  • Anji led a delightful watercolor project that left me happy with my end product painting and the class.
  • The instructor was a delight and the class was great!
  • Great class.
  • I learned more from Elizabeth in this class than in three years of other classes. I’m also enjoying my own work so much more.
  • This is the second class I've taken with this instructor and plan on taking more. Great environment and I learned so much!
  • Fantastic class and instructor. Appropriate for all levels. Lots of great feedback and encouragement. I learned a tremendous amount.
  • Allison is an excellent teacher. I have signed up to continue taking her classes
  • I really enjoyed taking this class. The instructor was very knowledgeable and very patient with a novice.
  • Wennie’s a great teacher! She very clearly demonstrates the technique students will use in their paintings.
  • Great class. Enjoyed learning the basics of Japanese Ink Painting. Instructor was great and there was plenty of time for questions and practice.
  • Class was great....I learned exactly what I needed to know to move forward. Helpful evaluations and wonderful demonstrations.
  • I loved the Instructor. She gave great suggestions on what tools are best to use. I am a beginner, so I found the ideas useful. I would love to take another one of her classes.
  • Class was great. Painting techniques were broken down into easily understandable movements we watched and then practiced on 3 different trees. Variation welcomed and feedback on each of our pieces. Really worthwhile.
  • So fun, informative and helpful! Instructor Claire was supportive and professional. Would definitely recommend to others!
  • Excellent teacher allows each student to develop a personal style working on paintings of their choice, and is always ready to answer questions and make suggestions. Each class he gives a presentation on an aspect of painting and painters with lots of interesting paintings as example. I learned so much this session.
  • Eggplants in Dry Brush Watercolor

This course provides step-by-step instruction in dry brush watercoloring and Carrie Di Costanzo caters her instruction to accomodate the learning needs of both novice and experienced watercolor artists. Overall, the class met my expectations. Carrie's well-defined course syllabus with its art supply list, her model eggplant drawing, and palette color mixing guide gave attendees a nice headstart for a successful painting experience. There were sufficient breaks to move around and class time went by quickly. It was a thrill to virtually meet up with similar-minded individuals from across the country and observe everyone's progress throughout the day.
  • Great class and Claire was a great instructor.
  • Really enjoyed this class and learned a great deal. Laura Habian was wonderful and explained things so well and was very encouraging. Definitely recommend this class and will look for others that are similar. Watercolor isn't something you can master in a few classes and I want to learn more. Thank you, Laura! Karen
  • Excellent teacher Todd Carpenter with lots of interesting art information. Plenty of time to paint andask questions and discuss. Relaxed sharing of Art. Online so perfect for group who all painted at home and had set up so knew what they were doing.
  • It was excellent!
  • I took Jade Scarlett's painted mandala class in January, a perfect month for doing something special for myself. She gave a materials list that set you up for success in future mandala projects. I enjoyed her method of teaching, and sharing her ideas, and projects. She made sure everyone succeeded.
  • I’m glad I get a chance to say how great the class was and the teacher who ran it. Dutch still-life techniques were meticulously researched and presented and the professor gave a lot of his free time to answer my questions and concerns. I’m a big fan.
  • I loved the Virtual Intermediate Watercolor Florals class with Jade! You do not have to be an "expert" as Jade walks you through everything step by step and my end product was beautiful! I really like that this class gives you more actual painting time than most of the "beginner" classes where they spend a lot of time going over the basics. Jade is an amazing teacher and I credit her for helping me to fall in love with watercolor painting during the pandemic. I look forward to taking this class again!
  • I had fun learning to draw at this class. I discovered that I may have a hidden talent. The teacher was encouraging, and the fun part was sharing our creativity with everyone in the class. I would definitely take this class again to improve my drawing skills.
  • Marcelo is a gifted and outstanding instructor. This was a new approach to watercolor for me, but I learned more in six weeks than then the past two years of lessons. I would highly recommend this class and hopefully will take another class with Marcelo in the future. Mary
  • I am a true beginner with no prior experience. I learned about brushes, brush strokes, and paint mixing. Judith gave me great critiques with very good tips. The only negative is that the students seemed to be sorted by age instead of experience. I was the only “newby” so it was a bit intimidating.
  • Loved my class. Well worth the money, can’t wait for the next!
  • Todd Carpenter was an excellent teacher. Each week, he displayed and reviewed different artists' work and taught a lesson (often, both came from our questions and requests). He allowed us to choose our own subjects, then answered questions and gave feedback as we progressed. Todd is the best art teacher I have had on Zoom.
  • Peter has an ability to push and encourage each person’s talent. I recall an example of a statement which resonated with me to my core, comparing an individual artist to a person’s voice. We each have our own style and voice which needs to be developed, and is so powerfully unique! One can give the tools, but that one voice/artist tapping into their own experience is excitingly powerful. I felt the nurturing of my own talent emerging through my experience with Peter, as well as the “students” who were so supportive, as more of a mentor or coach through these eight classes. Highly recommended!!!

Discover the Best Painting Classes Online

Have you ever wanted to learn painting, but you did not know where to begin? Any person of any age or ability level can learn to paint. The term “painting” is used to describe the action that creates the end product–both are referred to as “painting”. It dates back to prehistoric times, when nomadic people created paintings on rocky walls using charcoal. The oldest paintings discovered to date were recently unearthed in Spain, and are thought to be over 42,000 years old. Today, we define painting as a method of artistic expression in which paint, pigment, color, or another medium is applied to a solid surface. A brush is most commonly used to apply paint, but other tools such as knives, spatulas, sponges, and airbrushes can be used alone or in combination with brushes.

Why You Should Learn Painting Online

Painting is an excellent hobby if you are looking for a way to relieve stress or want something to do during your free time. You may enjoy the part of painting that allows you to create something for another person as well. A special gift in the form of a painting that a loved one can hang in their home, for example, is the perfect way to show you care. It could be a painting of another loved one, or simply something that is meaningful to the person who will receive it.

You may not realize it now, but there is a large community of people who enjoy painting both casually and professionally. Once you have a basic understanding of how to paint, you may want to research local clubs, groups, events, or organizations where you can meet other people who like painting. Groups like this can be in-person as well as online and offer you the opportunity to create a new social circle.

Looking for your new side hustle? Painting is a marketable skill that you can turn into a part-time job, or even a new job entirely. Selling your paintings through an online marketplace, or in-person at a craft fair near where you live, are both options for spreading your creative joy around. You could even begin taking commissions, where you create custom paintings based upon the requests of your customers.

Virtual Painting Classes

The idea of taking an online painting class might be intimidating, but much like in-person painting classes, they have their pros and cons. One good thing about taking a virtual painting class is that you can attend the class from anywhere. This means you can work on your painting project at home, in your backyard, or even in a public space like a park. There is also no commute, so you save some time and money. The biggest con about taking an online painting class is that you generally have to supply your own materials and equipment.

Interested in online painting classes? CourseHorse has many options to choose from, so it should be easy to find something that will work for you. For example, Beginner’s Intro to Watercolor Painting: Single Session is a class that explores the colorful world of watercolor painting. You will experience learning and fun in this relaxed group atmosphere while you discover your unique form of self-expression.

Beginner Watercolor Online is a six-session course focused on botanicals, and you will learn to paint with luminous, sparkling watercolors. Enjoy acquiring new techniques and learning through fun activities that transition into studies and landscapes.

Online Painting With Acrylics 301 is a virtual class for all levels in which you will learn the techniques of 20th-century painting masters. These include mixing colors and preparing your canvas for your work.

Painting the Natural World is another watercolors class that is perfect for all skill levels. In this class, you will learn to make expressive marks, mix colors, and apply water mindfully. It is recommended that you have at least basic knowledge of painting and watercolors to take this class.

Online Oil Pastel 101 is a virtual class that teaches you about the creamy, easy-to-mix medium that is oil pastels. You will learn the basics of color theory and create unique projects using smooth blends and subtle applications of color.

Color Mixing is a six-session class in which you will discover how to mix colors that accurately represent the world around you. You will make charts for permanent reference and then apply this knowledge as you paint flowers and leaves from live specimens.

Online Vs. In-Person Painting Classes

Learning painting online is a great way to get started with painting, especially if there are not any in-person painting classes in your area. You should gain the same knowledge of painting in an online class as you would at an in-person class, and if you take a live online class, you will still get the real-time feedback from your instructor who you would at an in-person class. This type of feedback is critical to learning painting in an easy and relaxing way. Just remember that if you choose to take an online painting class, you will most likely need to purchase your own materials, but your instructor should give you a list of what to buy.

Can I Learn Painting for Free Online?

While formal training from an expert will help most people learn painting more efficiently, the short answer is yes, you can get started on your painting journey with online tutorials and videos such as those found on YouTube. At the end of the day, though, if you want real-time feedback and a creative atmosphere in which to learn, you should enroll in a formal class.
