Description

Andrew Harwood, Founder

Andrew Harwood has worked in nearly every facet of the wine industry over the last ten years. His love of wine started while working in a number of the country's best dining rooms. Yet his true passion was discovered while making wine in Hungary, France, and California.

After spending two years as the Assistant Wine Director at Picholine in Manhattan, he decided he wanted to experience the production end of the industry. He spent 1997 in the vineyards of Tokaj, Hungary and then went on to earn his Master of Management in Hospitality from Cornell University. During his first year he served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Beverage Department under Professor Mutkoski. His second year of study was spent working at Chateau Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux, France and studying in Paris, France at L'Essec Ecole du Commerce. Following graduation, he went to work as the Assistant Winemaker at Limerick Lane Cellars in Sonoma County, California.

Limerick Lane has a total staff of two, so his work there was varied and diverse. In addition to making wine, he was involved in sales & marketing and obtained intimate knowledge of the workings of a small winery. Through this he was able to better understand what really goes into a bottle of wine and how the "Marketing Machine" of many bigger wineries really drives the direction of the wine trade.

He has been written up in Newsweek Magazine (October 6, 1997) for his work in Hungary and was featured in The Wall Street Journal (April 11, 2000) for his plan to convert tobacco fields to vineyards in Southside Virginia. His teaching experience includes Cornell University, City College of San Francisco, and Mercyhurst College, yet he has logged most of his hours as an educator as the founder of NYC Wine Class, a company he started in April 2002 that continues to make wine accesible to people by teaching them to get in touch with their own palate.

Great knowledge. Fun experience. May not be best for. Novice but our 3 previous course selections were cancelled due to attendance. It was not the instructors fault - but not an environment welcoming to introductory education or for more elementary questions. Communication was lacking prior to the course - we did not receive the link or the promised cheese pairing suggestions. Would definitely book another course though - just not as welcoming an experience as would have been desired.

learned from the host/presenter - very knowledgeable, nice style, strange at beginning as no one really said hi, come in, sit down, will get started shortly - maybe it was timing, but all went well after, great cheeses, good education

It was a very intimate class. Although a little difficult to find at first once we got going it was a blast. The instructor was very knowledgeable about wines and the science behind them. We tasted and enjoyed some delicious wines, learned a lot, and tried some delicious cheeses as well. Would definitely recommend this class and I personally would like to go back to take another kind.

The atmosphere, the materials and the content covered was great. The instructor was very knowledgeable yet down to earth and laid back. I just wished there was a wine I liked that I could purchase. I did not like any of the wines. For my personal experience, that was the only disappointing thing. I understand it’s a class and not a winery, so I would still highly recommend this to anyone who is in the city and wants something fun/interesting to do!

We loved the design of this class in that it felt like we were attending a dinner party in a friend's living room. The value of the class was great, as well, for the amount of wines tasted accompanied with the fantastic cheeses/breads. Our only complaint about the experience was that we didn't feel our teacher taught us anything we didn't already know about wine; the class mostly focused on region and its effects on taste. Nothing against the teacher - but this course is for wine beginners who want need a good foundation to start.

Cons: Space too tight. Instructor spoke super fast. Hand out sheets confusing. Pros: Nice wine & cheese selections. Pleasant group of fellow wine consumers. Learn a bit.

Andrew is very knowledgeable. I went solo, everyone else was in couples. The class was very enjoyable and people were friendly. There was plenty of bread and cheese to go with the wine. Will take other courses with Andrew.
