  • Beginner Acting I: The Basics

It was a transformative experience for me. In the past 8 weeks, our class went from strangers to close pals. We played “zip zap zop” games, memorized each other's names, acted out skits, learned the 5 W's - what, why, where, when, and who - and performed play excerpts and monologues. I explored a different side of myself - a more verbal, aggressive, louder, more expressive side. The acting tools we learned are not only useful in acting but in real life, such as conversational tools, you know what I mean, casting, the unimportant, urgency, impulse, gun drop, and more. The class made me feel so emotionally secure that I cried while acting Prima Facie. I am thankful for every member's 100% commitment. It was an unforgettable experience.

John is a great teacher and a fun person. Those are critical for learning. Nobody wants a teacher who is judgey or mean or just not fun. For such a short class, I learned a ton. Thanks so much John!

I'm so happy I told this class. The class was a hands on immersive experience in creating a film from a short scene. It felt like one week too short. I learned a lot about what aspects of filmmaking I'm interested in and will pursue more thoroughly. Worth the money and time!

So many times, we as actors forget the play of acting. You go into class and everything's like, ‰ÛÏGreat work‰Û: like everything's work. At The Barrow Group, it really came from this other perspective: ‰ÛÏThis is play.‰Û That was a really great time. I would say that was my most significant training.
