  • Digital Photography I: An Introduction for Beginners

    John B. • April 18, 2025
I enjoyed the class. There were only three of us which was nice as it was almost like having a private instructor. The instructor was knowledgeable and presented information well. I got what I was hoping for out of the class. Only down side was the class had to be rescheduled several times, I believe because people cancelled.
  • Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting

    Lora • April 13, 2025
I had no drawing experience prior to taking this course. Raphael is a great teacher and introduced me to concepts like measuring proportions, mark mapping, value scale. He broke things down in a way which was easy to understand, taught me to look at lines and lighting which was tremendously helpful. I was able to draw a still life using charcoal and pastel which even I am proud of. Usually my mind is distracted by many things, but when in Raphael’s class I am able to totally concentrate on drawing which he refers to as active meditation, so true! Raphael walks around and pays individual attention to each student, and has us look at each others work, which sounds daunting but actually is a fun experience. Since this class I’ve been sketching and looking at everything in a different light, becoming more observant and noticing much more details. I highly recommend this class!

After wasting time watching explanation videos online, I decided it was time to take an in-person photography lesson. Best decision ever to sign up and attend this class. Mindy is the best! Within 3 hours, we’d covered the basics and got to test what we’d learned. For anyone on the fence about whether this class is worth, it most certainly is. Felt so much more confident shooting in manual mode after this lesson. Looking forward to taking more lessons with them.

  • Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting (For Two)

    Anna Cho • April 6, 2025
My husband and I took this course as a way to get reintroduced into drawing and could not have asked for a better teacher than Raphael to ignite our passion to explore the arts and also appreciate life around us through the lens of an artist. Raphael not only teaches techniques such as mark mapping, grayscale values and working with charcoal, but also helps with your mindset towards the arts. I am a perfectionist and the arts always intimidated me because I always compared myself to artists who worked years at their craft and found my own art lacking. Raphael helped me overcome that mental obstacle and encouraged us to embrace our mistakes and reiterated that as a beginner its normal to make mistakes and that there is no shame in making them. Mistakes help us grow and even start to understand how to improve and even great artists take years to feel satisfied with their works. We are both so appreciative of being able to work in his art studio and have a meditative space to draw and polish our observation skills as we work on still life. It has felt like a little pocket space outside of the hustle and bustle of the city outside. Our skills have improved drastically from the first session to the last and we are looking forward to booking more time with Raphael who has been an incredible teacher. We love that he encourages us to appreciate our peer's work and share the things we love about their work because seeing their growth and talent is inspiring and their encouraging comments definitely make you feel more accomplished about your own work. I highly recommend Raphael and his class whether you are a budding artist or an already accomplished one because he is an encouraging and funny teacher. Always walk out of his class with a smile because we had a great time even after a long day.
  • Accelerated Introduction to Drawing

    Anonymous • April 1, 2025
The instructor was truly so helpful and took time to really cater the experience to exactly what I needed in my level of drawing. It definitely is an intro class and an introduction to the studio so do keep that in mind as a good chunk of the first hour was walking through the studio and talking about what services were offered etc. The instructor did gladly let me stay past the time to help me individually with my drawing which I so appreciated and everyone there was so helpful. I would definitely recommend if someone is considering full time classes at the studio for an introduction class.

  • Authentic Tagliatelle al Pesto

    John J. • March 18, 2025
Really nice class as i booked it for myself only. I was invited and placed with a family of 5 that was so nice. Learn how to make pasta with no machines but use your hands and correct tools, the really Italian way. I didn't realize that machines can heat up your ingredients for your sources and can ruin them. I am here in town for 6 months and wanted to do something over the weekend and these classes works for me and can for you too! Cheers!
  • Classic and Creative Cocktails

    John J. • March 18, 2025
I went there by myself and was welcomed by all. Class mates were all nice and friendly to talk too so, just get out and talk to them. We are all trying to learn something new together and why not corktail drinks! Teacher was great, and wanted us to really understand how good drinks are made and some wrong ways to avoid! Cheers!
  • Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting

    Celia • March 18, 2025
Raphael is such an incredible instructor. He assesses your current skill level (even if at 0 skill) and adjusts his guidance accordingly. Although in a group setting, it feels very personalized and tailored to each student. I feel invigorated to do more art in my free time and look forward to continuing learning under Raphael's guidance. Truly would give this 6 stars if that was an option. I was looking to learn how to blend colors and understand the fundamentals of a drawing/painting so that I can grow my skill set to feel confident enough to call myself an artist. In just 3 sessions, I do feel that confidence! Couldn't be more grateful for these sessions, they are FABULOUS!
  • Authentic Tagliatelle al Pesto

    Tyler D. • March 17, 2025
The instructor was great honestly. She was super helpful, friendly, and inclusive of everyone. I think my only complaint with the experience was that the cooking class was not held in a kitchen and the class was not as communal as I would have expected or liked. I would recommend the experience to a friend though.
  • Paint and Sip Workshop: Midtown (BYOB)

    Kenny H. • March 17, 2025
Overall, I like the course very much. It's affordable and located in the heart of Manhattan. The workshop itself feels very artsy, welcoming and comfortable. I also like that I can BYOB. The instructor is also very friendly and easy to interact with. All the supplies are provided to make for a very smooth experience. My only complaint is that the instructor is going a little too fast for me. Perhaps this course could benefit from a 30-minute extension? Overall, wonderful experience and I would definitely book again.
  • Pottery Wheel Throwing

    Kristina K. • March 17, 2025
My family and I took the pottery class in New York City. It was an amazing experience. The instructors were very thorough and helped us a lot. We were very new to pottery and using the wheel, but they came around and helped us when we were lost. I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in learning how to use the pottery wheel and basic techniques.
  • Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting

    Franz Lino S. • March 14, 2025
This was a fantastic fundamentals of drawing & painting class. The class can be very personal, where you're taught at your skill/experience level so it doesn't ever feel like you're "behind" others. Also, just learning the mark-mapping technique alone made a huge improvement in my drawing which was great. Excited to continue going!
  • Handmade Dumplings

    Mahmudul H. • March 13, 2025
The teacher was very informative with his instructions. And came to every table to help. He also gave us the recipe at the end of the class
  • Paint and Sip Workshop: Chelsea (BYOB)

    Shauna P. • March 12, 2025
Really fantastic! Patricia was a jovial, funny and patient instructor. I was with a group of seven and we all had a phenomenal time!
  • Craft Cocktail Making @ Upscale Speakeasy

Discover the Best Makeup Classes Near Me

Makeup is an art and a form of self-expression that people have engaged in for thousands of years. During ancient times, makeup was used for religious rituals and cultural traditions, and for enhancing one's beauty.

In ancient Egypt, both men and women used kohl to line their eyes and create a smoky effect. In ancient Greece, lead-based makeup delivered a pale complexion – though at the cost of being toxic. During the Renaissance, women used egg whites to create a matte complexion and natural pigments to color their lips and cheeks.

Today, makeup is more popular than ever. Makeup tutorials and beauty influencers inspire new trends and styles, and people use makeup to express their personalities and individuality. You can use makeup to enhance your features, conceal imperfections, or create a unique style – from subtle, natural-looking makeup to bold, dramatic looks that make a statement.

There are many types of makeup products, like foundation, concealer, blush, eye shadow, mascara, and lipstick. You can create a complete look using multiple types of makeup, or choose just a few. Select high-quality, safe, and certified makeup that is healthy for your skin, your health, and the environment. Quality makeup is often easier to apply and gives you better-looking results.

Why You Should Learn Makeup

Do you ever feel like the way you picture yourself in your mind doesn’t match the way you appear to the world? Makeup gives you a way to express your creativity, individuality, and personal style. When you learn to apply makeup that enhances your natural features, you can feel more confident and empowered.

Despite the seemingly effortless results some people achieve with makeup, making it look great is an acquired skill. Learning to apply makeup can be a fun and social activity, where you bond with others who share your interest in beauty and fashion. Who knows, you may become so good at applying makeup that you’ll be in demand for your friends’ special occasions, or enjoy a new, creative career as a makeup artist.

The cosmetics industry is a 45 billion dollar market in the United States, and almost 400,000 people work in the beauty industry. Makeup artists for theater and performance earn an average annual wage of $124,000. There are many resources available to help you develop your makeup skills and discover your unique style.

5 Ways to Learn Makeup

Makeup is readily available at every department store and pharmacy, so it’s simple to choose a few products and give them a whirl in front of the mirror. If you really want to master the art of makeup design, it helps to learn from someone who is an expert. Here are five ways to learn makeup:

  1. Follow self-paced and on-demand classes. Online content like YouTube tutorials are a great resource for learning how to use makeup. 2. Enroll in beauty school. Beauty school provides formal training and hands-on experience If you are interested in pursuing makeup as a career. Many beauty schools offer programs in makeup artistry that cover everything from basic techniques to advanced skills.
  3. Read books and magazines. There are many books and magazines available that can teach you how to apply makeup. These resources often include step-by-step instructions, photos, and tips from makeup artists. They can be a great way to learn the basics and gain inspiration for new looks.
  4. Attend an in-person class. When you take an in-person class you have a live instructor to help you every step of the way, and you can share your new hobby with other like-minded people. In many cases materials are provided, so you can just show up ready to learn.
  5. Take a live online class. A live online class provides all the benefits of a live instructor, but you can access the course from wherever you are. If you are in a community without any makeup classes, you don’t have transportation, or there’s no time in your schedule for a lengthy commute, you can learn up-to-date makeup skills from your own home.

What Will I Need to Learn Makeup?

When you learn makeup, you’ll develop a variety of skills and techniques and knowledge about different products and tools. If you're just starting out, you’ll need a few essential things to begin your makeup journey.

Makeup Brushes and Tools

The right tools are essential for achieving professional-looking makeup. You'll need a range of brushes, like foundation brushes, eye shadow brushes, and contouring brushes. Plus, you’ll need other tools like makeup sponges, eyelash curlers, and tweezers.

Makeup Products

To start practicing makeup, you'll need to invest in a few basic products like foundation, concealer, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, and lip products. You may want to purchase products that suit your own skin type and skin tone – you can always practice on yourself.

Skincare Products

Before you apply makeup you should start with clean, properly prepared skin. Use products for cleansing, toning, and moisturizing your face, plus skincare products that address your skin concerns, like acne or aging.

Lighting

You must have good lighting for accurate makeup application, so you can see facial details clearly. Invest in a makeup mirror with lights or set up a workspace near a window with natural light.

If you're taking a class, many of these materials will likely be provided for you. If you're learning on your own, it's important to invest in quality materials that will allow you to practice and hone your skills. You’ll want to expand your collection as you master makeup artistry and invest in more specialized products and tools.

Is it Difficult to Learn Makeup?

Like any skill, learning makeup requires practice and patience. At first, it may seem overwhelming to understand the different techniques, products, and tools involved in makeup application. Taking a class can help you learn the basics and gain confidence in your skills. If you are more advanced, a class can help you quickly master professional makeup skills.

Remember that makeup is an art form and everyone's approach and look will differ. Don't be discouraged if it takes time to find what works for you – keep practicing and experimenting until you find the techniques and products that express your personal style.
