What you'll learn in this comedy writing class:

It's one of the dream jobs of many comedians: working in a real writers' room on the staff of a hit TV sitcom. But how do you get that job? What is it like? And most importantly... can I really do it? In this intense six-week course, students will begin to craft their very own sitcom script in a classroom experience designed to mimic working in an actual TV writers' room.

Through a combination of lectures, examples, worksheets and exercises - as well as copious amounts of actual writing! - this course will take students through the process of development, and using their own original characters and ideas, show them how to apply proper technique and structure that will result in a finished professional sitcom pilot script.

That's right... at the end of this six-week course (with plenty of your own hard work and creativity, naturally!), you will leave this class with an ACTUAL SCRIPT IN HAND, written entirely by you! Seating for this unique class is very limited; don't miss out!

Is this an online course or in person, because I'm in Toronto. If in person could you point me in the direction of an online course?

Question from wearywriter
Does this class teach you how to write and create a format for your ideas? Or is it free form with a few worksheets to get you to think for yourself and then trial and error with writing?
Answer from Kristle C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Yes, this class teaches you how to write and format your ideas. The school recommends coming into the class with a rough idea for a sitcom! It doesn't have to be fleshed out; just something simple like "I'd like to write a show about my time in the military" or "I've got an idea about these three guys who run a bar", etc. (It'll get fleshed out in the class).
Answer from Kristle C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
The School will also discuss things like show styles, character arcs, story beats, outlining, and more; through the six weeks, you will be walked through the entire process of creating a script. If you do all of the homework assignments, by the end of the six weeks, you will actually leave the class with a completed pilot script. Hope this helps!

Flappers Comedy University

We believe that comedy is truly an art-form, a combination of raw talent and technique. Talent can be lost without technique, so we first teach joke structure and the basic language of comedy. We also believe that what makes a great comedian is being personal and authentic and, perhaps, a rule-breaker,...

Stand-Up Comedy Writing Level 1: 10 Week Workshop

This class is temporarily being offered remotely.

at Gotham Writers' Workshop - Online Zoom Conference, New York, New York 00000

Comics say it’s the greatest high. You step into the light, take a swig of water, pick up the mic, then reduce a crowd of people to a mass of helpless laughter. Sure, the risks are great—silence, heckling, humiliation—but on a good night a stand-up feels richer than Seinfeld and Rock combined. You “kill” or “die” depending on your material....

Who doesn’t love the pleasure of literary laughter? We’re talking about essays, memoirs, articles, short stories, and novels that are humorous. It can be anything from a true story about the special hell of raising kids to a far-fetched tale of a would-be knight tilting at windmills. As Mark Twain says, “The best way to cheer yourself up is to...
