  • Introduction to Japanese Floral Design

    Anonymous • April 21, 2025
Wonderful class with a great lesson on the history and techniques of Ikebana, the art of Japanese floral design. It was both informative and hands-on—I learned how to create my own arrangement and got to make one myself. We carefully took it apart for travel, and I was able to take home a vase, which was an additional $50 (clearly listed when booking). The class itself was $150, and well worth it! Shout out to TikTok for the inspiration. The teacher is very sweet and her work is stunning.

  • Digital Photography I: An Introduction for Beginners

    John B. • April 18, 2025
I enjoyed the class. There were only three of us which was nice as it was almost like having a private instructor. The instructor was knowledgeable and presented information well. I got what I was hoping for out of the class. Only down side was the class had to be rescheduled several times, I believe because people cancelled.
  • Wallet Making Workshop

    Teresa E. • April 18, 2025
The instructor allowed each of us to create our own small leather project. I ended up making a subclass case. She taught me enough basic skills to feel comfortable investing in leather working as a hobby. I still make small leather goods today!
  • Stone Carving Class: A Skill Based Approach

    Lilly J. • April 18, 2025

  • Introduction to Arc/Stick Welding

    Megan W. • April 18, 2025
Michelle is a patient instructor and thoroughly explains the process and potential pitfalls of welding techniques in a clear and easy manner. Her studio is easy to get to and big and bright. I learned a lot in the one lesson and feel the small class size made personal instruction and technique correction possible. She is welcoming and kind- which helps immensely when diving into a new skill!
  • Watercolor Painting (Beginner/Intermediate)

    Salita B. • April 18, 2025
This watercolor class was a revelation—beautifully structured, thoughtfully paced, and led by an inspiring instructor, Allison, who made even the most complex techniques feel within reach. As someone who had never touched watercolor before, I left my first year not only confident but with a piece accepted into an art show—proof of just how transformative and empowering this class truly is.
  • Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting

    Lora • April 13, 2025
I had no drawing experience prior to taking this course. Raphael is a great teacher and introduced me to concepts like measuring proportions, mark mapping, value scale. He broke things down in a way which was easy to understand, taught me to look at lines and lighting which was tremendously helpful. I was able to draw a still life using charcoal and pastel which even I am proud of. Usually my mind is distracted by many things, but when in Raphael’s class I am able to totally concentrate on drawing which he refers to as active meditation, so true! Raphael walks around and pays individual attention to each student, and has us look at each others work, which sounds daunting but actually is a fun experience. Since this class I’ve been sketching and looking at everything in a different light, becoming more observant and noticing much more details. I highly recommend this class!
  • Japanese Ink Painting (Sumi-e)

    Anonymous • April 11, 2025
    Amazing experience
  • Alterations Workshop

    MAUREEN M. • April 10, 2025
I was a bit more advanced than other students—and they accommodated me. I left with exactly the skills I wanted!! Really a great experience.
  • Make a Classic Longboard (Introduction to Woodworking)

    Andrew S. • April 10, 2025
The Longboard class was just so well thought out. It was a one and done session which started with a great overview of the class. We talked through designs and goals, and then started sketching out our plans. The support was superb - If you were more advanced, the team offered suggestions and guidance, and if you were completely novice, they were extremely attentive. The level of instruction was wonderful and the class was fun and informative. I can't recommend this highly enough. From start to finish, this was money well spent!
  • Twisted Wire Jewelry

    Aegina B. • April 9, 2025
This class involves one project, a lovely twisted wire ring, although if you're quicker or more skilled (I'm just kind of intermediate), you may have time for an extra piece. It was challenging, but I learned a lot and was pretty proud of what I accomplished. It will be even more exciting when the new jewelery labs at 92nd Street Y open with new equipment!

  • Digital Photography I: An Introduction for Beginners

    Alejandra P. • April 8, 2025
After wasting time watching explanation videos online, I decided it was time to take an in-person photography lesson. Best decision ever to sign up and attend this class. Mindy is the best! Within 3 hours, we’d covered the basics and got to test what we’d learned. For anyone on the fence about whether this class is worth, it most certainly is. Felt so much more confident shooting in manual mode after this lesson. Looking forward to taking more lessons with them.
  • Digital Photography I: An Introduction for Beginners

    Tyesha T. • April 8, 2025

  • Long Pose Figure Drawing & Painting

    Lisa M P. • April 8, 2025
I took my first class in long pose figure drawing with Roy. He is a phenomenal teacher and artist. I was feeling very out of my league having never drawn based on a live model but he quickly guided me and put me at ease. The vibe of the class was relaxed and the small group was perfect since we all got a lot of attention and there were regulars in the class who were very friendly. I highly recommend this class and Roy as a teacher!

Alexandra was a delightful instructor, and we learned several very useful stitches we could use in our work. The handout contained handy resources, and I also appreciated the free time at the end to create a mini-project of our own.
  • Watercolor Techniques

    Doris E. • April 8, 2025
Mark is very kind and gives direction well. His examples are clear and three hours of a perfect amount of time to work and not feel rushed. He also can be specific with his suggestions and answered questions patiently. I love kind of fast but will would take his class again if I don’t find another stimulating class nearby. I kind of wish it started earlier, though.

    Corinne T. • April 8, 2025
The class was such a delight. We were treated to not only an introduction on the fundamentals of drawing but also the history and theory of art and why it matters. Raphael is a wonderful teacher. Would highly recommend !
  • Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting (For Two)

    Anna Cho • April 6, 2025
My husband and I took this course as a way to get reintroduced into drawing and could not have asked for a better teacher than Raphael to ignite our passion to explore the arts and also appreciate life around us through the lens of an artist. Raphael not only teaches techniques such as mark mapping, grayscale values and working with charcoal, but also helps with your mindset towards the arts. I am a perfectionist and the arts always intimidated me because I always compared myself to artists who worked years at their craft and found my own art lacking. Raphael helped me overcome that mental obstacle and encouraged us to embrace our mistakes and reiterated that as a beginner its normal to make mistakes and that there is no shame in making them. Mistakes help us grow and even start to understand how to improve and even great artists take years to feel satisfied with their works. We are both so appreciative of being able to work in his art studio and have a meditative space to draw and polish our observation skills as we work on still life. It has felt like a little pocket space outside of the hustle and bustle of the city outside. Our skills have improved drastically from the first session to the last and we are looking forward to booking more time with Raphael who has been an incredible teacher. We love that he encourages us to appreciate our peer's work and share the things we love about their work because seeing their growth and talent is inspiring and their encouraging comments definitely make you feel more accomplished about your own work. I highly recommend Raphael and his class whether you are a budding artist or an already accomplished one because he is an encouraging and funny teacher. Always walk out of his class with a smile because we had a great time even after a long day.
  • Accelerated Introduction to Drawing

    Anonymous • April 1, 2025
The instructor was truly so helpful and took time to really cater the experience to exactly what I needed in my level of drawing. It definitely is an intro class and an introduction to the studio so do keep that in mind as a good chunk of the first hour was walking through the studio and talking about what services were offered etc. The instructor did gladly let me stay past the time to help me individually with my drawing which I so appreciated and everyone there was so helpful. I would definitely recommend if someone is considering full time classes at the studio for an introduction class.
  • Art Workshop (Thursdays)

    Isabel • March 29, 2025
I took Raphael's classes because I had always wanted to explore painting, and the experience exceeded all expectations. Raphael is an exceptional teacher, offering a perfect blend of art history and practical drawing techniques. He meticulously arranges each space, paying attention to every detail and ensuring the lighting is just right for each student. This setup allows you to draw still life with an incredible focus on shadows and intricate details. You'll master both charcoal drawing and the art of creating stunning pastel paintings. Raphael even provides all the necessary materials, so you don’t need to worry about purchasing anything. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to enhance your skills, Rafael's classes will ignite a lasting passion for art.
  • East Village Gallery Crawl

    Anonymous • March 25, 2025
Alex, who guided us from one gallery to the other was welcoming and gracious. The four galleries were sufficient and interesting. I thought the Ki Smith Gallery was the best. The owner talked for about 30 minutes and provided us with interesting information along with prices for the art, which many galleries do not do. I look forward to my next adventure with the ArtsClub. A well run program. Thank you.
  • Sewing Machine Basics Workshop

Discover the Best Art Classes in NYC

Art is a vast subject that includes graphic and charcoal drawing, oil and acrylic painting, watercolor painting, candle making, flower arrangement, metal welding, and more. Art represents a unique way to express your thoughts and emotions. Some use art as a hobby, while others find unique full-time career options related to their passions. Whether you want to learn art as a hobby or turn it into a career, taking an art class is one of the best ways to learn art.

Why You Should Learn Art in NYC

NYC is a city of wonder. You can find endless opportunities for entertainment. However, the hustle and bustle of the city can begin to wear on your nerves if you don’t find a proper way to relax. Art is a good way to relieve stress while learning a productive hobby in your free time.

Art classes in NYC will also connect you to a larger community. You’ll be able to meet with others who have similar interests and join local art clubs and groups. In addition, some art skills are marketable. For example, taking a comic drawing class could help you find a job as a comic artist. Or, after taking a soap-making class, you could open up a part-time store to sell your creations.

In-Person Art Classes & Schools in NYC

In-person art classes offer a unique chance to connect with others who share your interests. In addition, you’ll gain access to personalized training and feedback from a professional instructor in your area. CourseHorse offers dozens of art classes in NYC, which guarantees you’ll find a class that sparks your interest.

For example, Brooklyn Craft Company offers a Beginner Embroidery Workshop for just $45 on May 11th. The class teaches students the basics of embroidery and will specifically teach how to complete a handmade peace sign. During the three-hour class, you’ll learn skills that will help you master the first steps of embroidery.

CourseHorse offers a class through Michelle Greene Sculpture called Mig Welding on April 22nd. You will learn to set the machine, tack, run a bead, and create a small sculpture to take home. You will also learn to set up a welding shop to create furniture and art. A unique part of this class is that it’s limited to only two students, ensuring that you get personalized feedback and guidance.

You can also take Stained Glass Lessons through Valeria Divinorum. The class has an average size of just four students and lasts two hours. Students will design their own stained glass artwork, gain an understanding of stained glass materials, use glass grinders, and create a stained glass art piece from start to finish. The class is held on April 19th and costs $175.

Another unique class is the Dyeing with Nature course through Better Than Jam's Store & Studio. The class teaches students how to use natural materials from a garden to prep and dye fabrics with lasting colors. Students can dye three items and learn how to dye fabrics at home. You can book a class on June 4th for $95.

There are countless classes available to those living in the NYC area. Some other options include a Pillow Workshop, an Accelerated Portraiture Drawing course, and an Intro to Jewelry Casting class. For more class options, visit CourseHorse’s NYC art class page

Virtual Art Classes & Schools

Although in-person classes offer the best benefits, there is also an option to take virtual art classes. Online art classes are best for those who can’t or don’t want to travel to class. You can take the course from the comfort of your own home.

Although many virtual art classes may require you to purchase your own materials, that’s not always the case. For example, the Preserved Flower Arranging course through Petal+Eon provides the flowers and vase delivery costs in the price of the class. This course takes place on April 19th and costs $77.

Another option is the six-session Acrylic Painting for Absolute Beginners course. Students will learn acrylic painting techniques for beginners with personalized instruction from a painting expert. The class costs $310 and starts on April 20th.

CourseHorse also offers Crochet for Beginners, which includes six sessions to teach beginners how to crochet. The class costs $275, and you’ll need to purchase your supplies beforehand. To find the supply list, simply read through the class description, and you’ll find a full list of materials you’ll need to get the best experience from the class. The class starts on April 19th.
