Reviews for Acting Classes in NYC

Acting Classes in NYC are rated 4.6 stars based on 1,265 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • Such inspiring and well tutored classes. They were so good, I went on to sign up for more classes with the school.
  • Barry Shapiro is such a great instructor and tutor. I really enjoyed his classes and hope to do more with him.
  • Barry is easy to work with and a great teacher. I learned so much and finally recorded my VO Reel. I highly recommend it!
  • A warm and friendly vibe was palpable as soon as I entered the class even though I was a first timer both the instructor and other classmates who were regulars said hello with huge smiles. They were thorough in providing full disclosure that this was the fitness warm up and training class, not the true stage fight choreography, but I already expected that because they sent me a reminder email the day before class with the class title "Combat Simulation". The email provided the address description of facilities and what to expect during class. Class was easy for me to follow because of a few months of prior experience with karate and krav maga, because many of the moves involved incorporate martial arts of kickboxing elements such as roundhouse kicks, upper cuts, jab cross. It was organized like a group fitness class with a playlist of music and each song involving a set of moves that was explained and practiced once in advance. The instructor was energetic and upbeat and occasionally walked over to individual participants to correct or improve form or suggest modifications. The class also incorporated a strength element with squats, deadlifts, bear crawls, Russian twists and other moves done in combination sets. There was also a directed stretch at the end. I felt challenged but not intimidated and at the end other participants who were regulars and professional actor said I did really great for my first time. Some of the other attendees in class were regular stage or tv actors and told me they had taken this and the true stage combat class for over a year and used it in their profession. One of them was also the instructor for the stage combat choreography class and invited me if I would be interested to ever attend her class, and took the time to inquire if I had a preferential interest in either stage or screen acting so they could tailor the class to include instruction for either - like sound effects slaps for stage or camera angles for television. I felt very welcomed and encouraged by this as a new student and would think it a good environment if a budding actor wanted to make contacts among fellow attendees. The facilities and space they provide is very suitable with changing rooms showers and a stretching area and mirrors to be able to look at your form.
  • Improvisation class with Dave, Walter, and everyone has been engaging. We did zip-zap-zop, three lines, switch game (switch the object), columns, fixed word count, genre, the world's worst xxx, and more. From not knowing how to start a sentence to calling back the terms we mentioned earlier and adding information to indicate who, what, and where, I stepped into the improvisation world. Every other member in the team were also doing their best. The liveliness of the class is inspiring and the concept of "yes, and" instead of denial can be life-changing. Highly recommend the class; wish to take more.
  • It was a transformative experience for me. In the past 8 weeks, our class went from strangers to close pals. We played “zip zap zop” games, memorized each other's names, acted out skits, learned the 5 W's - what, why, where, when, and who - and performed play excerpts and monologues. I explored a different side of myself - a more verbal, aggressive, louder, more expressive side. The acting tools we learned are not only useful in acting but in real life, such as conversational tools, you know what I mean, casting, the unimportant, urgency, impulse, gun drop, and more. The class made me feel so emotionally secure that I cried while acting Prima Facie. I am thankful for every member's 100% commitment. It was an unforgettable experience.
  • Andy is personable and totally engaging. His instruction super clear and his advice, invaluable.
  • This class was awesome!! A lot of great information and an amazing workout!
  • The teacher was encouraging and the class was engaging. I practiced new skills.
  • This class was reality based and expressed how your unique personality is what triggers the imagination when introducing a product. Importantly, the student must know that VO is an unpredictable business!
  • I took some very interesting notes on things i did not know before. Special techniques as well as emotions. Definitely would recommend the course to anyone who wants to learn more about becoming a better actor.
  • It was great!
  • My experience was great. Arielle was a really great teacher for beginners, positive & encouraging
  • This class was a great way to start acting and the tools were incredibly insightful in finding genuine ways to remember to PLAY while acting a scene. Loved it!
  • Love the class and the instructors. Having a lot of fun and learning so much. Highly recommend this class
  • It was perfect for beginners! I loved every bits of this class! Lorrie is indeed an amazing coach! I want to recommend this course for anyone who are interested to start an acting career in TV and film industry.
  • It was wonderful! Very fun!
  • Wonderful experience, highly recommend to those who are looking to understand the art of comedy and method of delivery. Comfortable setting and helpful feedback.
  • Amazing experience. We did improv exercises that involved acting and emotion. I would love for them to have more events like this.
  • such an amazing class to get amazing feedback for your auditions!
  • Lots of positive energy from everyone. The staff is really great.
  • This class was fantastic! The teacher really knew what he was doing and I had a lot of fun. I would recommend this class to anyone looking to sharpen their acting skills, or who just wants to get out and try something new.
  • WOW, what a class! Professor Stolzenberg is not only a consummate professional, but an incredible teacher. His ability to address each student’s needs and learning styles made for an in depth, enjoyable class in which everyone learned so much.
  • I couldn't believe it! What an amazing experience! This guy really knows his stuff! Mark Stolzenberg is truly a unique and special talent. I look forward to more and more!
  • What a great class! Mark is an incredibly gifted teacher with a "sixth sense" on how to help each student achieve their best performances on camera. I learned so much in just a few hours!
  • The class was great and the instructor Spencer really took his time listening and explaining how to better our craft!
  • Great environment!
  • He was fun!!! He gave joy to the craft, he saw me for me and that meant so very much to me!! He really saw me! I would love to continue working with him and growing in my craft! Janira
  • Excellent teacher!
  • Jennifer was awesome! Very knowledgeable and encouraging! The pace of the webinar was perfect.
  • Andy is a really engaging, entertaining and knowledgeable teacher. It was an absolute delight! Highly recommend!
  • It was an excellent class. Andy Roth is thorough and takes time with all of his students. I'm thankful!
  • Great teacher and great class format. Instructor was very knowledgeable and the class structure was very well organized. He packed alot into the hours given, with no time wasted. I highly recommend this class.
  • The class exceeded my expectations. The instructor, DF Sweedler, is a wealth of comedy knowledge. Getting into the comedy industry is no easy task, but this class is an extremely valuable resource to getting you started. Upon completion of the course I enrolled for a second time, and will keep coming back until I feel I’ve mastered everything he has to teach.
  • Class was great! The instructor was super helpful and I had a lot of fun
  • Excellent instructor and lots of fun!
  • A dream or at least part of it turned into reality. I may not be currently able to afford it for unfortunate but understandable reasons, but I will look no further when it comes to VO. Edge provided me with at least one day of my dream to Voice Act in a way that exceeded what I have always imagined. Pricing is fair and am still going to return to this Studio in the near future. Trust in the edge team to not only welcome you to their place of excellence but also help you find the inner voice over talent you may or may not have known. Will and have recommended this studio with fairness, honesty, and respect.
  • It was a really good introductory course with a great instructor! Wanting to explore options for addressing persistent spoken-voice issues, I took a chance and signed up for the Linklater Voice & Feldenkrais Workshop. My expectations were low, but my mind was open. I am so happy I took the chance. The instructor, Tamala Bakkensen, was wonderful. She immediately connected with the class as a whole and with each student individually. Her knowledge of the Linklater/Feldenkrais methods was impressive as was her ability to bring those methods to life without overintellectualizing the process. I highly recommend this course!
  • Auditions 101

Loved her energy and notes she was very helpful and inspirational. Definitely pushed me to get going in this new field for me.
  • Ed the instructor was great! The class was really informative and helpful.
  • So, I'm giving this 5 stars because the teacher, Nick was really amazing. He was so patient and good with the kids (who didn't always make it easy). I will say-- there were adults and teenagers and younger kids in the same class. This was super fun for my 7.5 year old who learned a lot from the teens (who were very, very funny). I was expecting a different format, but what I actually wanted was Improv, and it was 2 hours of improv. So-- a heads up, this was an improv class.
  • Shawn is a great teacher. I learned a lot, and got more confident in performing. He helped me accept myself, and how to develop ideas.
  • I learned so much in Ron’s beginners acting class on zoom. He is clear, patient and very encouraging. I highly recommend taking his class. ~Dina
  • The student make up was diverse in every way so nice to watch and learn from one another. Instructor was phenomenal.
  • 3-Hour Group Evaluation Class

    Definitely informative, educational & helpful.
  • I met Walt and many others in this class. The class is great, Walt is great, funny, energetic, and knows what he is doing. The class has good number of students - not too little to be too boring, not too much to not get any chance. The students and Walt shall bring the best out of you, even if you are breaking a sweat. I shall go here again, if I have time.
  • Our 8 year old began this class a few weeks ago, it has brought her out of her shell, expanded her imagination, she loves it!!!
  • Our 8 year old just finished her second class, she is obsessed. We are beyond thrilled to have found this outlet for her, being able to get a class out of NYC in suburban Massachusetts is amazing!!!
  • Our 8 year old thoroughly enjoyed it!!! First time student, she’s looking forward to more!
  • Very informative and an excellent explanation of the business side of voice overs. Enjoyed it very much!

Discover the Best Acting Classes in NYC

Acting is a great skill that can take you far, especially in a city like New York. However, if you are considering entering the acting world with little experience, you should take a few classes to perfect your craft. If you choose to get into acting but need more insight into what it entails, there is a class for just about everything. You can consider voice acting, commercials, theater, movies, or all four. Acting is a skill that just about anyone can learn, but how far you want to take it and your projected success depends on your skill level.

Why You Should Learn Acting in NYC

You could learn acting for numerous reasons aside from just wanting to make it big in the Big Apple. For example, acting is a great way to get comfortable with public speaking. If you fear speaking in public or want to improve your public speaking skills, an improv class could be just what you need to make this happen. These classes typically teach students how to think on their feet or be comfortable in their own body. Improving your comfort around public speaking doesn’t only have to happen for an aspiring film actor but also for a company executive or even a sales rep. Anyone can use the skills taught in an acting class to improve an aspect of their life.

If you don’t need to enhance your public speaking skills, maybe you want to increase your friend group. NYC offers acting classes all over the city, giving students a chance to make new friends. Attending an acting class in New York, where many come to learn and live, can allow you to meet people from all over the world. You can connect with others on an acting level or simply find other similarities. Whatever the case, taking an acting class can be a phenomenal way to connect with new people and make new friends. Finally, you can decide to act just simply because you want a chance to laugh and learn something opposite to what you do during your day today. Imagine a banker by day and an improv actor by night. Taking an acting class can be a stress relief and a time to have fun and not take yourself too seriously.

In-Person Acting Classes & Schools in NYC

In-person acting classes should be plentiful in a city like New York. There are performing arts schools that offer courses or even some community colleges that can host beginners level courses.

For example, the Barrow Group Acting School hosts classes for just about every acting need. Founded in 1986, this school is an award-winning non-profit studio. Located in Hell’s Kitchen New York, they offer an extensive list of workshops, a 6-week summer acting program, and even a 2-year acting program for students. The Barrow Group is considered one of the best-performing arts training schools in New York. One entry-level course they offer is Beginners Acting I: The Basics. For $425, this class is broken into 8-sessions. It highlights quick and powerful ways to make your performance more natural. It’s an excellent start for a beginning actor. No experience is required, and it’s a great introduction to the Barrow Group approach.

After you complete level one, you can move on to Beginners Acting II: Getting Specific, also offered at the Barrow Group Acting School. The prerequisite for this class is to complete level one to allow a deeper dive into the Barrow Group approach. This 8-session course is designed to help actors become more sensitive, imaginative, responsive, and relaxed as an actor. Students also work on script analysis structure, monologues, and scene study. Getting Specific is considered an intermediate level and would be for someone who wants to take their craft to the next level.

The Barrow Group also offers courses for kids. There’s a One Week Kids Acting Camp (Ages 6-9) for aspiring child actors. Starting in the summer, this all-day camp is just what your kid needs if they are looking to act or even play. The camp explores ensemble building, improvisation, and foundational elements of storytelling and ends with a show for friends and family. Camp runs six hours a day, giving kids plenty of time to learn and play.

The Acting School for Film and Television in Midtown Manhattan offers many options for in-person classes. The school is located on the Westside of Manhattan in New York and teaches practical acting skills year-round. The Acting School teaches small classes year-round to meet your accommodations. One class that many find interesting is the Business of Acting course. The class, split into four sessions, will teach students how to promote themselves as an actor to land roles. They cover the basics such as headshots, resumes, casting notices, networking, acting reel, and websites. There is also a guest lecturer, a professional manager or agent, who comes during the last week.

Essentials of Film Acting 110 is offered at the Acting School in Greenwich Village as a one-time new students course with a promotional price of $99. Students can only take the course once due to this fantastic rate. It’s a three-part course that stresses acting for film and television. The class sizes are kept small to ensure that each student gets their own camera time. All the work and techniques in this course aim to make students look most effective on camera. Instructors spend time helping students properly convey their emotions on screen while teaching tricks of the trade. Their work is screened for casting directors, agents, managers, and others in the final class. An Essentials of Film Acting 110 (For Returning Students) is also offered, teaching the same techniques but for students who have already taken the original course.

Edge Studio Voice Over is one of the most recognized voice over casting, recording, and educational training centers. They produce work for Disney/Pixar, Chase, Google, and many others making them the ideal place to obtain voiceover training. In addition, Edge Studio Voice Over offers The “Vocal Health” course. This class is aimed at helping students understand how their voice works and how speech and sounds are produced from their vocal cords. Students can also expect to learn behaviors that damage their voice and how to avoid them, develop a daily vocal care routine, and voice care for when sick. As a voice artist, your voice is your job, and it is crucial to maintain your vocal health to continue booking jobs.

Want to get into voice over work but can’t book an audition? Auditions 101 might be the course you need. By the end of this class, students can expect to be better prepared to deliver an exceptional performance when they get a script and practice voice over audition etiquette. Learn what elements a casting director looks for in auditions, and gain the skill to self-direct auditions and self-critique performances to improve your audition submissions. In addition, students should be prepared for a performance-based class that is high energy, interactive and receives feedback from a qualified coach. All of this for only $45 should help students deliver successful auditions.

Virtual Acting Classes & Schools

You may not have access to in-person acting classes right now; not to worry, a virtual class is an option. While virtual acting classes can be great for someone looking to attend a class from anywhere or who wants to cut out their commute time and take the course from home, there could be some challenges with taking an online class too. In more physical courses, getting a feel for the emotions or “vibes” online might be hard but not impossible. Also, some courses require materials that could be available during an in-person class, but online, you could be required to provide them yourself. If you find that the pros outway the cons when it comes to in-person versus virtual, you have options for online acting classes

Linklater Center offers a Drop In Warm-Ups online class. Warming up your body and vocals is an essential part of acting. It’s kind of like warming up before you exercise. This drop-in course offers a series of exercises designed to help students become more expressively present in the world. The warm-ups class can be used to prepare for an audition or show, care for vocal strain, or keep your vocal fresh for your next job. For $20, students can enjoy this drop-in as long as they have a reliable internet connection to access the Zoom class.

Acting for Film and TV is another great online option for someone looking to venture into acting. Broken into four sessions, this class explores the basics of acting in a safe, positive, and encouraging environment. Students can also expect to work on film and tv scripts with scene partners in an audition style.

Private Group Acting Classes in NYC

Private group classes are always a great option. They can be used as a fun team-building event for a business or even with a group of friends. CourseHorse offers live online group class options; for example, private group acting classes in NYC can be arranged for your next event. You could host a Virtual Team-Building Improv Workshop for up to 40 people. This one-hour workshop costs $500 for ten people and then $25 per person afterward. Your team can practice listening, collaborating, problem-solving, and being fun and silly. The improv class does not have to be for aspiring actors; it is a way to have fun and bond with each other.

If improv is not precisely what you had in mind, you can have your class curated by CourseHorse. When you complete the contact form on the CourseHorse site, within two business hours, you will hear from someone on their free event planning team. Provide them with the details of what you are looking for and your group size; not to worry, this can be changed later if needed, and someone will help book the class you need with no booking fees. You’ll receive confirmation within 24 hours, and all the heavy lifting will be handled. CourseHorse also supports multiple virtual platforms if your company has a preference.
