  • Kimmie was clear, helpful and fun. We had a great evening, and we really did learn!!!
  • My partner and I had a wonderful time! Sandro is a fantastic instructor.
  • I love the class and the instructor was great!
  • Fun class, instructor was super helpful and engaging. Already recommended to a friend!
  • Date night with my wife and we had a wonderful time! Now have more tools for the kitchen - like how to actually make good sticky rice.
  • The course was very enjoyable. The teacher was kind and talented. I highly recommend it!
  • Jade said the class was a lot of fun. It was close to her home. The instructor was so kind and patient. All of the classmates got along and enjoyed making sushi too. The sushi portions were plentiful. It was enough for dinner and lunch. She’s looking forward to attending future sessions.
  • It was a great course. The teachers were very friendly and knowledgeable and I share a table with a great couple. I'm planning my next one!
  • Sushi basics was great. I took my sister for her birthday— we loved the context given to the ingredients, the small stories and jokes sprinkled in, and the quality of instruction. There was lots of freedom in the sense that could you essentially freestyle sushi making if you wanted, but the instruction was stellar, and I was making full rolls in minutes. 10/10!
  • So much fun and a ton of food! The instructor was so good at explaining each step!!
  • Well done.
  • Great class!
  • I haven't taken the class yet and rescheduled for 11/22
  • Loved our instructor.
  • The chef was very knowledgeable, and created a fun atmosphere. Everything was delicious and made with high end ingredients, and there was bartender on site, which was a very nice touch. It was a really good time, and we’re excited to try other courses.
  • We had a great time with Chef Nancy!
  • Great experience. Fun place, with wonderful people and a knowledgeable teacher. Thank you, Abby!
  • Really enjoyed this experience. I went with 1 additional person, and we were lucky to be seated at a table with great people who we got along with. The course providers mentioned they would send the recipes, but I never received them which I was bummed about. The only other thing I wish I knew, was that it would be a vegetable based sushi course and not raw fish sushi making. (Totally okay, maybe it was in the description and was overlooked.)
  • Great teacher and clear, concise instructions. I cant wait to try this at home!
  • Excellent knowledge and a relaxed environment. Abi has true passion for cooking :) A well balanced event!
  • This class was excellent! The layout makes sense but I do wish we were able to eat in between and not wait until everything was done !
  • Chef Lex and his sous chef Billy were fantastic! Chef Lex was a great teacher who was able to demonstrate how to do each step and provided a lot of information about each ingredient (what to look for and where to buy it). I will definitely take another class with him in the future!
  • Chef Lex was amazing! He was very engaging, energetic, and passionate about his work/job. I appreciated hearing his back story.
  • My experience was amazing! I went with my boyfriend and it was our first time taking a cooking course. The ingredients were fresh and clean, the instructions were clear and we made delicious sushi at the end! It was a great date and cooking lesson.
  • Very informative and made it fun to learn! The chefs walked around and taught as you went which was helpful too. It was really a great experience. Food was good and taught you skills to bring home. We met a nice couple across from us which made the experience a lot of fun. Have recommended this course to many colleagues and friends to take as well for date night.
  • It was amazing. We will def be doing this again and bringing some friends. It had everything, education, fun, laugher, drinks and good food.
  • Japanese Sushi Cooking

Chef Dan, Chef Mark, and Chef Kristi put together an awesome, informative class. They were very organized and they set up a friendly comfortable environment. We were one of their first sushi/tempura classes and we had a blast. Everybody was able to work at the same time and participate after easy instructions of the processes were displayed. Would recommend to anybody and also looking forward to taking their pasta class! Thanks to all the chefs.
  • It was very special birthday gift for my girlfriend. We both loved it. Never made dumplings before and it was very great instructions for making it 3 different ways!! I love the variety of options that was given for the sushi to be made. Will definitely look forward another type of class.
  • Chef Nora was very nice and thoroughly explained step by step how to prepare our rolls. She was very accommodating and a great host! It was a fun learning experience.
  • Fun class but large groups of 22 year old girls are annoying. Consider age based ranges and also partnering with dating services.
  • Just wanted to thank you all for a fantastic experience making dumplings and sushi with Chef Kenesha! She made the class both informative and super fun! Would definitely return for a class with her and her team. Just wanted to pass along a positive review!
  • Very very fun. Highly recommend
  • Great instructors! Delicious food! So much fun! I am looking forward to booking my next class.
  • We had a great time and learned a lot...we will be making sushi more in the future!!
  • Virtual Sushi Rolling with a Kit for 2

  • Virtual Sushi Rolling with a Kit for 2

The class was Awesome had so much fun and learned a lot of techniques, will definitely recommend!
  • Loved this class! The instructor was fabulous and I ended up with a delicious dinner and an exciting new skill. Highly recommend.
  • I attended Simon's virtual sushi making class with my 12 year-old daughter, and it was wonderful! He's incredibly knowledgeable, and very engaging. I was skeptical about doing this remotely, but Simon had a great setup for teaching (one camera on him, one on the cutting board), and made an effort to ask questions, check-in with each participant, have us show what we made, etc., so that the remote format felt very personal. Oh, and the pre-class checklist of materials to purchase was very clear and easy to manage (another thing I had been worried about). I would definitely do this again. Well worth it.
  • What a great way to spend evening under quarantine. Simon was a wealth of knowledge who phenomenally kept us all engaged even while cooking rice. Easy to prepare, participate, and enjoy!
  • Awesome experience!
  • We had so much fun! Such a great experience to do with a significant other or friend
  • This class was fantastic! Aimee and Chef Tony are great and made the experience so fun. They are very personable and great teachers. We ate a bunch of rolls there and still had 3 boxes of sushi to take home with us. I highly recommend this class.
  • Our instructors was really informative and fun to work with.
  • Great experience! Oonagh was an amazing teacher! I am not keen in the kitchen at all, and I was able to make 3 sushi rolls there and done it again at home. This class definitely boosted my confidence level and provided easy to follow guidelines to make dinner!
  • Teacher was attentive and nice. She really knew her stuff and gave us recipes to take home. Loved this class!
  • Instructor was fantastic! Great instruction! Fun night!
  • Rose and her assistants were amazing. The class was so much more fun than I expected! My husband and I had a blast :-) And I surprised that we can now easily make dumplings at home
  • The class was really fun and I also learned a lot at the same time. Highly recommend as a fun activity for couples and groups.
  • I really liked the class. Very good teacher. The place was great !! Excellent!!!!!
  • Fantastic experience!!!!

Discover the Best Sushi Making Classes in NYC

Sushi is an ancient, iconic dish enjoyed in Japan for centuries. It originated over 2,000 years ago and has since become a beloved part of Japanese cuisine enjoyed worldwide. But it’s not just a simple food, as sushi is a complex art form with its own traditions, techniques, and ingredients. The basics of sushi include knowing how to choose and prepare different types of fish, correctly season sushi rice, select nori (seaweed), and make flavorful combinations of ingredients. While this may sound intimidating, plenty of sushi making classes are available in NYC to help you learn the art of sushi. Many of these courses are geared toward beginners and focus on creating an enjoyable experience.

Why You Should Learn Sushi Making in NYC

New York City is a cultural melting pot, and with it comes a diverse array of cuisine from around the world. Sushi is no exception, as restaurants in NYC serve up some of the most delicious and authentic sushi dishes in the United States. Taking a sushi making course in NYC is the perfect way to learn about the traditional techniques and flavors of this beloved Japanese cuisine from some of the most experienced chefs in the city.

Learning sushi making is also an excellent hobby, as it can be a creative outlet, and you can even start hosting sushi parties or dinner nights with friends. Research shows that individuals with a hobby have lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. So it can also be a great way to stay healthy and happy in a busy city. Plus, once you’ve mastered the basics of sushi making, you can explore more advanced techniques and design your own signature dishes. There's also an opportunity to connect with a larger community of food enthusiasts. Sushi making classes in NYC are a great way to meet like-minded people with a shared interest in delicious food and diverse cultures, which can benefit mental and physical health.

In-Person Sushi Making Classes & Schools in NYC

There are numerous in-person sushi making classes in NYC, ranging from general lessons to more specialized courses. These classes are taught by experienced chefs who can help you understand the nuances of the craft and instruct students on how to recreate classic dishes.

The Make Your Own Sushi course from CocuSocial Cooking Classes is for those 21 and older and has an average class size of just 20 people. This hands-on, interactive class teaches participants how to create a salmon, veggie, and shrimp tempura roll in just 2 hours. The teacher also covers the proper way to make sushi rice, selecting sushi-grade fish and seasoning techniques. CocuSocial Cooking Classes is a well-known provider of cooking and baking courses across Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. This class is held at Red Hook Brooklyn, located on Van Dyke Street, and students are welcome to bring their own beverages.

Another top-rated course is the Hand Rolled Sushi class from CocuSocial Cooking Classes. Held at the iconic Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan, this class is ideal for anyone who wants to learn how to create hand rolls with a range of delicious ingredients. Participants will receive interactive, hands-on instructions on proper rolling techniques, making ponzu sauce, and cooking with the special catch of the day. Groups that book together will be in the same cooking group, allowing friends and family to connect over their mutual love of sushi. Outside drinks are not permitted in the class, though options will be available to purchase in the restaurant.

Those seeking a more specialized option should consider the DIY Sushi + Dumplings class from Home Cooking New York in SoHo, Manhattan. This $100 class is an ideal option for teens and adults, as it's geared towards anyone 16 and older. An average class size of just ten participants allows a greater focus on detailed instruction and provides an opportunity for beginners to get with the basics of sushi making. The instructor covers everything from the basics to creating versions of everyone's restaurant favorites, including assorted sushi rolls, vegetarian and pork dumplings, and a fresh salad with ginger dressing. Students gather at the end of the class to enjoy a meal together, with BYOB welcome for those 21+. It's a social and enjoyable experience perfect for a birthday celebration or special event with friends.

Virtual Sushi Making Classes & Schools

With how hectic life can be in NYC, online sushi making classes are an excellent way to learn this craft without having to leave the comfort of your own home. These courses run live over Zoom or a similar platform, allowing users to connect from nearly any location. There are several advantages to taking virtual sushi making classes over in-person options, including greater flexibility and the ability to rewatch lessons and still ask questions in real time. There's no need to find a physical campus, commute, or worry about missing classes due to travel.

On the other hand, there are some drawbacks to keep in mind when choosing between virtual classes and in-person ones. One significant difference is in the number of participants per class. Most virtual courses have much larger class sizes than their in-person counterparts, which can lead to less personal instruction. Additionally, staying engaged and interacting with the instructor when taking a course online can be more difficult.

There are numerous online sushi making classes for those in NYC that cover a range of topics from sushi basics to advanced techniques. Instructors on these courses often have decades of experience in the industry, so students can feel confident in the quality of instruction they will receive. Food Craft offers the Virtual Vegetarian Sushi Rolling class, which is entirely online and teaches participants how to make vegan sushi rolls. The class is two hours long and includes a kit with all the necessary supplies (for creating sushi rice, spicy mayo, and uramaki) sent directly to participants. However, participants must have some essential kitchen tools on hand such as a peeler, measuring spoons, bowls, and a chopping board.

You can also take the Japanese Online Class #2 with Aiko from The League of Kitchens. This class teaches participants how to make hand rolls and flavorful dipping sauces in the Temaki Zushi-style. The course covers the key components of hand rolls, including how to make miso soup and season vegetables. Chef Aiko encourages an open social environment during her classes where students can ask questions, have great conversations, and receive helpful critiques. The recipes taught in the class are from her family and require participants to purchase ingredients beforehand. A shopping list is provided to students, including items found at any local grocery store.
