Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this glass blowing class:

Neon Weekend at Brooklyn Glass is an introduction to the art and science of neon tube making! Students can expect to learn about the components that make a neon tube, the tools needed, and the method to create a spectacular custom light source.

Unlike the One-Day of Neon, students will have a full day of bending with the instructors. This will better prepare the student for future neon studio rentals by familiarizing them with techniques and procedures that may not be picked up in one day. In addition students will learn how to create neon bending patterns to enable them to design and create future projects.

Students can expect to create an abstract piece of neon, using various torches with intimate instruction. In addition, students will learn the bending basics such as splicing, attaching electrodes, double-back bends, right angle bends, and more.

Unlike other neon workshops, our classes are housed within a fully functioning neon shop and neon supply warehouse, allowing us to offer an abundance of materials needed (various colored tubing, power supplies, and hanging materials) on site. Many of our instructors work as full time neon producers and have years of industry experience.
The price of class includes glass, bending materials, one power supply, wiring, and the option to purchase your bending kit at the end of the course.Neon units can take up to 2 weeks to be pumped, all neon units must be tagged with the following information: name, email, date and what gas is to be filled in it.

This is perfect for those who are curious about neon and want to get some hands-on experience. It's just enough to help you decide if you want to move on further. The teacher, David, is great and to say that he's knowledgable is a major understatement. Location was easy to get to from most parts of the city.

David is a talented and passionate instructor. His confidence in the craft is inspiring. He had a good sense of humor and the first day was incredibly informative and invigorating. My only bit of feedback is that the second day of the course was a bit hellacious. He was teaching one-half of the class while the assistant was teaching the other half. They seemed to be on two different pages the entire time. Towards the end of the course when I needed help I stood around for probably 45 minutes waiting for help. It would be helpful to instruct the students to have a design prepared for the second day of class and be told immediately whether or not the design was viable to make the most use of an already short class.

Super informative and interesting class. My only request would be to have a better course schedule and more instructions as to when to stop and start projects and tasks. I'll be sure to visit Brooklyn Glass again soon!

If you are interested in learning how to work with neon, take this class. I drove 3 hours from Cape May, New Jersey and stayed at a hotel for the weekend. (By the way, the La Quinta Hotel is right across the street from the studio if you are coming from out of town.) I was in a class of 5 students. Our instructor David made sure he understood what each of us wanted to accomplish through this class. He then worked with us, as a group at first and then individually giving each of us help and instruction to reach our specific goal. The first day we learned the basics of bending, filling and shop safety. We each made a working neon light that we kept. Day two we each picked a project and worked individually with plenty of one-on-one from the instructor and his assistant. The shop is clean and well equipped. The instructor and assistant were there early and stayed late both days. I would highly recommend this class, and I'm really glad I took it myself.
