Auguste Rodin was initially rejected from the École de Beaux-Arts, which turned out to be a great thing for art history. This enabled him to think outside the box and generate new types of artistic expression.
To celebrate the centennial of Rodin’s death, the MET has brought all of its Rodin holdings together in an illuminating exhibition. Clay models demonstrate Rodin’s ability to capture figures in motion; plaster casts display his willingness to reproduce and reconfigure his own works; and paintings by others prove his connections to the Impressionists and Realists. Together, we will see how Rodin revolutionized–and modernized–the field of sculpture.
