Good amount of info, but it really is a crash course. 3 hours is not enough time to practice all of the concepts they discuss. Didn’t love the instructor.. he wasn’t very engaging and when I went up to him after to ask him a question about my camera, he just looked annoyed, and gave me as quick a response to get me out the door. Was a good class for what I paid, but probably won’t be back anytime soon.

The instructor was really good and knowledgeable. But I didn't feel that I really knew my camera THAT much more than I did before. Also the space wasn't great. Too small, hot, and hard to find. I enjoyed the class and will definitely take another one. I was just hoping for more.

Like so many people, I have wanted to get into photography and off of "full auto" mode for so long, but have always found excuses to put it off for another day. This class was exactly the jump start I needed. Even though everything we learned can be summed up on one sheet of paper, the class developed those fundamental concepts very well so that they now feel intuitive. I think achieving the same level of intuition for the things we learned would have taken me twice as long if I had tried to teach myself using books or online sources (and, at the rate I was going, probably spread out over five years!). The class was also very fairly priced. After putting in some practice myself, I definitely plan to enroll in another class with this company.

Charles is a fabulous teacher, calmly and coolly walking and talking us through some pretty complex, arcane stuff. He did an excellent job of telling us how our cameras work and then allowing us to experiment with the concepts we learned in the class to reinforce the concepts we learned. This is the photography class I've been looking for for years.

Question from anonymous
Hi, I have a DSLR and am looking to figure out why when I shoot in RAW mode the pictures are blurry, but when I shoot in JPEG they look better. I know the camera does it's own little magic on the photos when shot in JPEG, but how do I get the photos to not be blurry in RAW mode? I want to fully utilize the Manual mode on the camera. I use Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop, but the settings never seem to fix the blurriness properly. Will this class help with these issues? Thanks
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! There is a difference between the RAW and jpg files in that the jpg almost always has in-camera sharpening applied. This makes the image feel sharper (less blurry). Raw files do not on their own apply any sharpening... this is handled during the user’s post-production stage. While this is all fascinating, the school doesn’t really cover the deep reasons why this is the case in the 3 hr Crash Course: Camera Basics. Instead, they focus on camera operation useful to all students to take better pictures.

Question from anonymous
I would need to buy a digital camera before taking this class. Is there any recommendation? Thank you.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! A DSLR, mirrorless, micro 4/3 systems. Any camera that has manual control of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, it should be suitable for this class. Film-based SLR or rangefinder cameras are OK, but you may wish to rent one of the DSLRs to use alongside your film camera for the in-class feedback. Hope this helps!

Question from Goldy 1.
What age group is this class geared for? Kids or adults?
Answer from Chermalyn P. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi, Goldy! The class is geared for all ages, 13 and up. The school requires that students under 18 be booked by their parents or with their parents' permission. Most of their students are over the age of 18, from early 20s all the way up to retirement age, but they certainly welcomed younger students in the class. Young students have been successful at learning since it all depends on the student's comfort level.
Answer from Jeff J. Verified Student

Question from Goldy 1.
What age group is this class for? Kids or adults?
Answer from Arielle A. Verified Student
Adults, but mature kids could probably attend as well. There is a portion of the class where you go out in the street on your own to practice what you've learned so if sending a kid would be good to have an adult to supervise.
Answer from Antonia F. Verified Student
Adults.
