Spinning I: Drop Spindle

Learn to spin your own yarn on a drop spindle with this 3 Module class, taught by Donna Panner, founder and head of Spin City New York. Learn to spin or improve your spinning skills and learn new techniques including plying, carding, combing and silkreeling. No experience necessary.
All Materials must be bought at The Yarn Company and are not included in price.
The course is taught in 3 Modules. Module 1, Spinning Basics is a 4 week course, covering drafting, spinning, plying, tying, worsted spinning, plying, making CD spindles, luxury fibers and more.This 4 week basics course is a prerequisite for the 2nd adn 3rd Modules (see below) , as well as for Wheel Spinning, which starts right after this course ends (but on Tuesdays).Then two optional but exciting modules follow to complete the 7 week course. Module 2 is a two week course on Fiber Prep, including Carding and Flicking wool and Blending Fiber. Module 3, the the 7th week focuses on silk and students will learn to create yarn from various forms of silk, and Donna will demonstrate preparation of silk hankies/caps for spinning.

Note: Materials are not included and must be purchased at our store. No outside materials will be allowed in class.

Module 1 – Spinning Basics – Weeks 1 – 4

• Learn drafting, spinning woolen and worsted, and plying wile exploring a range of fibers and tools.

Week 1: Spindles & Wool – Worsted Spinning

• Intro to spinning – Demo on how to spin worsted

Week 2: Tying Skeins – Woolen Spinning

• How to use Niddy-Noddy
• Setting the twist – steam with tea kettle
• Demo – spinning off the fold

Week 3: Plying

• Andean Bracelet
• Make Quill/Bobbin for spindle

Week 4: CD Spindles, Supported Spindles and Luxury Fibers

• Make CD spindles
• Demo – various supported spindles including Navajo, Tahkli and Russian Spindles

Module 2 – Fiber Prep – Weeks 5-6

• Learn how to prepare wool for spinning from raw fleece as well as how to blend fibers and colors.

Week 5: Carding & Flicking Wool

• Demo: flicking & hand carding wool

Week 6: Blending Fiber

• Demo: Hackles, wool combs & drum carding

Module 3 – Silk – Week 7

• Learn how to create yarn from various forms of silk.

Week 7: Silk

• Boil silk cocoons
• Demo: prepare silk hankies/caps for spinning
