Discover the deeply satisfying and rewarding craft of carving spoons from green wood. Beginning with locally sourced timber and logs, participants will learn to evaluate wood selection criteria, understand where to source spoon-carving wood, and practice the technique of splitting a blank from larger pieces of timber. Through this ancient craft, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of wood technology, including wood structure, how different woods want to be worked, and the distinctive characteristics of various species that often cannot be obtained through commercial lumber suppliers.
The workshop employs traditional hand-carving tools, featuring primarily carving axes and specialized knives, to carefully shape raw wood into the graceful form of a functional spoon. A spoon is fundamentally a three-dimensional form combining a bowl with a handle, requiring precise work around shifting curves both inside and outside the vessel. Participants will master a variety of knife grips and handling techniques that enable safe, effective movement around the spoon's contours. Spoon carving represents a beautifully simplified approach to woodworking: no power tools, no loud machinery, just the quiet, meditative sound of wood chips and shavings falling softly to the floor.
Prior woodworking or carving experience is not required to participate in this course.
