Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this history lesson:

The Transcendentalist movement of the 19th century was a period of revolutionary and reflective thought. It brought forth some of the greatest visionary thinkers in American history who awakened the nation to its rightful spiritual and intellectual heritage. Their writings continue to inspire us to be ever-conscious of all-pervading Spirit, to seek true freedom, to strive for an unconditional love for humanity, to embrace each moment,  and to experience our own divinity.

Emerson
This prophet and sage drew from antiquity and Eastern thought but created a quintessentially American search for truth, freedom and self-knowledge. We will explore three key aspects of Transcendentalism—the Oversoul, Universal Mind and the Divine Will—as well as delve into the importance of seeking guidance from within and living in accord with Higher Law.

Thoreau
We will look at the significance of Thoreau’s Walden experiment and the values he emphasized—simplicity, independence, magna-nimity and trust—as well as explore how we can seek to embody these values in our own lives.

Whitman
In our final session we join Whitman on the “Open Road” to spiritual insight and cosmic consciousness, exploring the inspiring words and legacy of this earthy, embodied mystic. We will delve into his poetry as a living, breathing, joyous expression of our own infinite nature and a celebration of the ecstasy of the present moment.
