What you'll learn in this film editing class:

Cutting a film trailer is an art form of its own. Whether your goal is to secure funding, raise awareness, or market your film to a new audience, a trailer is an essential tool. Trailers are also illuminating templates that bring a clarity to cinematic storytelling, 3-act structure, and story mechanics.

In Trailer Editing, watch samples of effective film teasers and trailers, learn about tried and true structures, and discuss the best way to approach making a project-appropriate trailer. This workshop culminates in the group working on a short sample trailer with the instructor. Ideal for not only editors, but anyone who aspires to better understand trailers and storytelling.

This is a Post-Production workshop at the Extensions level.

Topics include:

  • Easing the Viewer Into Your Story
  • Pacing and Structure
  • Selecting Footage
  • Mood and Music Cues
  • Striking the Right Tone
  • Trailer Formats and Styles

Prerequisite(s): This is not a software-specific workshop. Fluency and the ability to work independently in one of the non-linear editing softwares listed in Materials below is recommended but not required.

Materials: You will need a computer or other device that can connect to the internet and support Zoom video conferencing.

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Online Workshop: Trailer Editing
Reviewed by Will R. on 8/21/2019
The workshop is great for people wanting to understand the fundamental structure of trailers and key elements. For those more advanced, you get to see the instructor's editing workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro. I wouldn't mind if this course was longer and allowed for more time on the editing process. The instructor is great!
