Class Description

Description

By the end of this workshop, students will have a strong foundational understanding of manual camera settings and how they impact image creation. They will learn to shoot confidently in manual mode, make intentional choices around composition and lighting, and apply ethical considerations to documentary photography. The class also introduces visual storytelling techniques such as image sequencing, caption writing, and metadata practices. Students will be introduced to a basic post-production workflow, enabling them to edit, organize, and prepare their work for presentation or portfolio use.

As part of the course, students will travel to a nearby location to apply the skills they've learned in class. They'll be encouraged to explore a variety of subjects—people, landscapes, textures, and movement—while experimenting with manual camera settings and narrative techniques through still images.

There will be assignments between class sessions.

Topics:

  • Manual vs Automatic vs Priority Modes
  • Compositional Techniques
  • Controlling Tone Through Exposure
  • Portraying Events Truthfully
  • Narrative Editing
  • Caption Writing Basics
  • Importing and Organization
