Discover the Best Stone Carving Classes in NYC

Stone carving is one of the older artistic crafts known to mankind. Originating during the Stone Age (about 10,000 BCE to 2,000 BCE), this prehistoric pastime was birthed through the development of stone tools and was utilized to for tracking and documenting information and creating art.

The Ancient Greeks are well known for their stone carvings which were a result of the stone-on-stone techniques. The creation of metal-based tools like those crafted from iron or steel allowed stone carvers to create more detailed works. The chisels, drills, and saws developed during the iron age are still widely used today.

Today, most stone carving is done via abrasion or diamond saw cutting. Other modern methods have emerged, too: applying high heat to the surface of stone or using oxyacetylene torches, lasers, or even jet heat are great options for larger sculpting projects.

Stone carving can be traced back to ancient civilizations found across the globe and you can even see the influence of ancient Egyptian, Near East, Greek, and Roman sculpture on the stone carvings of Medieval Europe. As artistic trends and tastes have evolved over the course of time, one thing has remained true: sculpting has always been popular as both a form of self-expression and a way to chronicle history.

Why You Should Learn Stone Carving in NYC

There are several benefits to learning the ancient art of stone carving in New York City. With well over 50 museums and endless construction and redevelopment projects, New York is an ever-changing, creative city that has a well-known past of supporting and encouraging artists and craftsmen. It is this inventive spirit that makes New York a great place to pursue stone carving.

As much about patience, concentration, and critical thinking as it is about the ability to manipulate materials, stone carving provides artisans the opportunity to be creative, express themselves, and maybe even minimize stress.

It can be difficult to unplug and limit distractions in today’s technology-centric world. Stone carving requires your sole focus, uses fairly rudimentary tools, and allows you to work with your hands. This cultivated focus combined with the tactile nature of carving stones can help melt away all the stress from earlier in your day.

Particularly niche in nature, stone carving can lead to developing a community of like-minded individuals. If you’re looking to make new friends while learning a new craft, then give stone carving a try. In-person or online classes can connect you to other passionate artisans that may help you further develop your craft. Practicing sculptors can even join various stone carving groups like the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association or the Stone Carvers Guild.

Learning stone carving could also lead to exciting new career paths. You could become a skilled artist, chiseling commissioned masterpieces from granite or marble, or you could work in the interior design industry, handcrafting mantels, stone pillars, and various other architectural accents. Banker masons are based in workshops and they craft, shape, texture, and polish blocks of stone. Fixer masons build or reassemble the stone on site according to the architect’s plans. For those with an artistic eye, well-honed skills, and the physical stamina needed, a career in stone masonry could be very fulfilling.

In-Person Stone Carving Classes & Schools in NYC

New York is a city known for its architecture and thriving arts scene. It has a storied history of being a home for aspiring artists, making it an ideal location for learning a new craft like stone carving.

Stone Carving with Ailene Fields is hosted by The Compleat Sculptor in Chelsea, NYC. A highly acclaimed sculptor, Ailene leads students through the basics of stone carving. The class covers topics like initial roughing out, developing a form, final finishing, and polishing. Students are required to purchase their own stones and can choose between softer stones or marble. Basic tools, a workbench, and storage space are included in the cost of the class.

New York School of the Arts offers a stone carving course, as well. Students will learn the history of the practice and the techniques used to shape stone. You’ll learn to select the appropriate tools and sharpen them and will finish this class with a personally-completed piece. (Special note: students are responsible for bringing their own supplies and soapstone.)

The Compleat Sculptor also offers Stone Carving Class: A Skill-Based Approach. Skills essential to stone carving will be introduced in a sequential manner over the course of the month. Each class includes open studio time where you can apply what you’ve learned. Each new skill is taught and practiced through a short assigned project, allowing students to create their own works of art.

While this class uses a different medium, Wood Carving at the New York School of the Arts will help you develop your artistic eye. Students will be introduced to the history of wood carving and its use in contemporary sculpture. You’ll learn the proper techniques to shape wood and how to care for and best implement your tools. Students are responsible for supplying their own supplies.

This wax carving class can be a great way to explore fundamental skills as well. Located on the Upper East Side, this class is a four-day workshop where craftsmen of all levels can start new projects or continue existing ones. Students will have ample time to hone their techniques and get familiar with their tools while they focus on their own wax-based creations.

Virtual Stone Carving Classes & Schools

While in-person classes are usually considered the most efficient way to learn a new hobby, online classes can accommodate more difficult schedules and create more learning opportunities. Online stone carving classes are led by expert instructors, just like in-person classes, but can be attended from the comfort of your own home, eliminating the need to commute or find parking. Live online classes allow you to ask questions and receive immediate feedback from an instructor, while on-demand classes provide even more flexibility by allowing you to stop and start whenever you need.

It’s important to note that students are usually required to supply their own materials for online classes, as well as coordinate an appropriate workspace. A list of tools and supplies will be sent to students prior to class so that you have ample time to prepare. While this adds a layer of complexity to your learning, selecting your own supplies may be more cost-effective and means you can practice stone carving techniques outside of your class.

While there aren’t currently any virtual stone carving classes available, there are several other creative courses that will teach transferable skills. You can learn to create a masterpiece from a simple block of clay in this portrait sculpture class. While you won’t be hammering and chiseling, you will learn how to sculpt from a live model using basic clay sculpting tools. This six-week course consists of live one-hour sessions with the instructor who will sculpt along with you, providing you with a step-by-step process.

Want to make your crafting more sustainable? Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose, Making Sculpture is offered by the Evanston Art Center. This exploratory class will use found and recycled materials as a way to expand your creative practice and challenge the boundaries imposed by traditional sculpture materials.

Or, you can try crafting your own jewelry in this polymer clay earrings and accessories class. This beginner-friendly workshop will teach you to make unique earrings and accessories using oven-bake clay and just a few basic tools. Students will work with polymer clay, design templates, and then cut, shape, and bake their own pieces. You’ll finish the class by assembling your clay pieces into wearable art.
