Writers often find their richest material in their everyday lives. This material is easy to overlook as too pedestrian because it’s hard to see what’s so close to us. The exceptional poet James Schuyler revealed his longing for home in writing about his breakfast and Yannis Ritsos revealed his and his fellow prisoners’ anguish in exile in writing about daily life in a prison camp. In this six-week class, we’ll try out different narrative and persona techniques that will enable us to access our own material, finding ways to write about our deepest longings even in the details of our everyday lives. We will discuss and draw from models by such writers as Ross Gay, Matthew Rohrer, Rachel Zucker, and others.
Each week we will submit exercises and give and receive critiques, including from the teacher. All readings and assignments will be provided in the online classroom, and there will be a weekly one-hour typed chat in which we’ll discuss writing and the assignments. Chat transcripts are always available to students unable to attend.
Open to all writers of both poetry and prose (memoir or fiction).
All classes and dates are subject to change and cancellation. We cannot be responsible for providing refunds or offering makeup sessions for classes missed as a result of students’ illnesses, emergencies or events beyond the students’ control. We make every effort to honor these designated times, but there is some variability.
Occasionally, a class may be canceled due to extreme weather conditions or other acts of God. We will make every effort to offer makeup sessions when it is possible, but no refunds will be granted in any case.
In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
Students generally had positive feedback about the Online Writing About Everyday Life classes. They appreciated the instructor, the writing prompts, and the constructive feedback they received from their peers. However, some students did not prefer the chat format used in the classes compared to the Zoom format. Despite this, the classes seem to have provided valuable learning experiences and helped students develop their writing skills. Quote: "I learned how to effectively express my thoughts and experiences through writing, and the feedback from my classmates really improved my writing skills."
